Brooklyn Arena Loses Billie Eilish Over Ticketmaster Dispute: Testimony
In a significant antitrust trial, the Barclays Center, home to a variety of events including sports and concerts, recently provided testimony about its switch from Ticketmaster to SeatGeek. This switch occurred in 2021 but faced backlash from Ticketmaster, which has been accused of retaliatory practices.
Ticketmaster’s Retaliation Accusations
John Abbamondi, the former CEO of Barclays Center, testified that after the venue transitioned to SeatGeek, Ticketmaster negatively impacted their concert offerings. He claimed that the number of Live Nation-promoted concerts dropped drastically, from over 20 to fewer than eight events annually.
Abbamondi indicated that a concert featuring Billie Eilish was a pivotal example of Ticketmaster’s retaliation. After Barclays Center terminated its relationship with Ticketmaster, plans for her concert were transferred to USB Arena in Queens. This change was reportedly a decision made by Live Nation, as conveyed by one of Eilish’s managers.
Warning Signs Before the Switch
Before the switch, Abbamondi received a cautionary text from Patti Kim, a vice president at Live Nation. In the message, she hinted that he should reconsider his decision regarding SeatGeek. He later described the exchange as a friendly warning about potential repercussions.
When Abbamondi notified Live Nation of their decision to proceed with SeatGeek, he encountered aggressive resistance. Joe Berchtold, Live Nation’s CFO, expressed his displeasure during the call, warning Abbamondi that securing concerts at Barclays would be challenging.
Ticketmaster’s Technology Criticism
During the trial, the difficulties associated with Ticketmaster’s technology were highlighted. Abbamondi compared SeatGeek’s advanced systems to “the Mac OS,” while characterizing Ticketmaster as reminiscent of “Windows 95.” He emphasized that technological superiority played a crucial role in Barclays Center’s decision to switch ticketing providers.
Legal Context and Implications
The Department of Justice is pursuing a split between Ticketmaster and its parent company, Live Nation, citing anti-competitive behavior. This trial is part of a broader government effort, supported by attorneys general from 39 states and the District of Columbia.
As part of the follow-up to the allegations, Abbamondi maintained that Barclays suffered lost revenue and concert opportunities due to the switch. Conversely, Live Nation’s legal representation argued the venue returned to Ticketmaster due to its superior services rather than any threats or retaliation.
Trial Duration and Expectations
The antitrust trial is expected to unfold over six weeks. The government’s case aims to illustrate how Live Nation’s practices may harm both venues and consumers in the live music sector.
