Miami as the 5-alarm warehouse fire escalates in NW Miami-Dade

Miami is watching a rapidly escalating emergency in Northwest Miami-Dade, where firefighters are battling a massive warehouse fire near the Florida Turnpike as crews continue a defensive attack from the air and ground.

What happens when a warehouse fire surges from four alarms to five?

Firefighters responded to a warehouse blaze near the 20600 block of Northwest 47th Avenue, north of Miami Gardens and near the Broward County line, just before 11 a. m. Thursday. Miami-Dade Fire Rescue dispatched additional units, including Miramar Fire Rescue, and the incident quickly escalated to a four-alarm blaze. At around 12: 30 p. m., it was upgraded to a five-alarm fire.

At an afternoon news conference, MDFR Chief Raied “Ray” Jadallah said over 200 MDFR crews responded to the scene. Officials described significant operational challenges tied to the size of the structure and limited access. MDFR Assistant Fire Chief Jason Fernandez said the building is a warehouse that’s over 300, 000 square feet, and access was limited as crews arrived and conditions intensified.

What if structural collapse and heavy smoke reshape the response?

The structure was engulfed by flames as a large plume of dark smoke rose into the sky. Video from the scene showed the roof and metal walls collapsing under intense heat. Fire the warehouse houses thousands of items, ranging from firewood to shampoo and deodorant, underscoring the complexity of firefighting conditions inside and around the building.

In the immediate area, several parked vehicles caught fire next to the warehouse. Firefighters identified an eight-inch water main system in the industrial area and were able to tap into several hydrants to support firefighting operations.

What happens when hazardous chemicals are discovered near the burning site in Miami-Dade?

Crews later discovered hazardous chemicals in the area, and a hazmat crew set up a command post along Northwest 47th Avenue. Miami-Dade Commission Chair Oliver Gilbert said the chemicals were stored in a warehouse near the one that erupted in flames, and he said the burning warehouse is a recycling facility.

Officials have not provided further details on what may have sparked the fire. Employees at the site said they believe an electrical issue may have been involved, with one employee describing a possible problem with electrical components in the roof. Other employees described people running in and out as the fire became visible, and another employee said workers attempted to extinguish the flames before they spread but were unsuccessful.

As the operation continued, crews maintained a defensive approach from both air and ground while command elements remained in place along Northwest 47th Avenue. Miami remains focused on the evolving firefight in Northwest Miami-Dade as crews work under challenging conditions at the five-alarm warehouse fire.
