Dart Services resume after overhead line power issue; minor disruption expected

Rail operations resumed in Dublin on Friday after dart services were suspended between Connolly station and Dún Laoghaire yesterday, Irish Rail said. One train was cancelled on Friday morning and several other services operated at reduced capacity as crews completed overnight repairs and managers handled knock-on operational issues. The outage was caused by damage to overhead power lines that was fixed overnight, reopening the line.

Dart Services: service status

Irish Rail confirmed that the line between Connolly and Dún Laoghaire reopened after repairs. The company posted: “Overhead line damage repaired overnight, line between Connolly and Dún Laoghaire has reopened. ” Despite that, a number of services were altered on Friday morning ET while timetables returned to normal operational patterns.

Specifically, the 6: 59 a. m. ET service from Connolly to Bray was cancelled because of an operational issue stemming from the overhead line damage. There were also reduced-capacity notices on several commuter services: the 6: 54 a. m. ET service between Greystones and Malahide, the 8: 30 a. m. ET service from Malahide to Greystones, the 10: 04 a. m. ET service from Greystones to Howth, and the 7: 55 a. m. ET train from Drogheda to Dún Laoghaire. Operators said crews completed the repairs overnight and reopened the track, but residual operational impacts affected some morning services.

Immediate reactions

Irish Rail characterized the disruption as stemming from the overhead power system and emphasized that the primary repair work was completed overnight. The company reiterated that engineered repairs allowed the corridor to reopen, while operational teams managed cancellations and capacity restrictions on affected services during the morning peak.

Commuter notices and platform announcements matched the timetable adjustments, with staff deployed to manage passenger flow at key stations along the reopened corridor. Transport teams focused on restoring full timetable integrity while monitoring equipment and service performance for any further issues.

What’s next

Operators said they will continue to monitor the overhead line and service patterns through the remainder of the day in ET, with further timetable updates if necessary. Passengers using dart services should expect some residual reduced-capacity runs while normal frequency is re-established; travel planning guidance and any further cancellations will be communicated through the rail company’s channels. The immediate priority for operators is to return to full capacity and prevent repeat outages as teams verify the repaired overhead lines and review operational impacts from yesterday’s damage.
