Sabres Secure Stanley, Schenn from Jets Before Trade Deadline

The Buffalo Sabres have bolstered their defense by acquiring Logan Stanley and Luke Schenn from the Winnipeg Jets. This move comes just before the NHL trade deadline, aimed at strengthening the team’s blueline. Previously, the Sabres had attempted to trade for Colton Parayko from the St. Louis Blues, but that deal fell through when Parayko exercised his no-trade clause.

Trade Details

In exchange for Stanley and Schenn, the Jets received multiple assets from Buffalo. The package included:

  • Forward prospect Isak Rosen
  • Defenseman Jacob Bryson
  • A 2027 second-round pick
  • The better of Buffalo’s or Edmonton Oilers’ fourth-round pick in the 2026 NHL draft

Player Profiles

Logan Stanley, a left-shot defenseman, has played all six seasons of his NHL career with the Jets. The 27-year-old has had a productive season, recording a career-high 21 points in 59 games and averaging 17:12 of ice time.

Luke Schenn, on the other hand, is a seasoned right-shot defenseman with 18 years of NHL experience. At 36, he has played for five teams since 2021 and is known for his defensive skills. This season, Schenn has one goal and six assists in 46 games. He was also part of the Tampa Bay Lightning’s back-to-back Stanley Cup wins in 2020 and 2021.

Contract Details

The Jets have retained 50% of Schenn’s contract as part of the trade agreement. Stanley carries a cap hit of $1.25 million, while Schenn has a cap hit of $1.375 million. These additions aim to address the Sabres’ lefty-heavy blueline.

Impact of Trades

Isak Rosen, previously selected 14th overall in the 2021 draft, has shown promise with 43 points in 37 AHL games this season. He has also contributed seven points in 16 appearances for the Sabres. Jacob Bryson, meanwhile, is an unrestricted free agent with five points in 35 games this year, earning a career-low average of 10:02 in ice time.

Additionally, the Sabres made another strategic move by acquiring center Sam Carrick from the New York Rangers. Buffalo traded their third-round pick in 2026 and a sixth-round pick from Chicago in 2026 to finalize this deal.

With these trades, the Sabres aim to enhance their playoff prospects moving forward in the NHL season.
