2026 Winter Paralympics Opening Ceremony Dazzles at Arena di Verona: Life in Motion Launches the Biggest Paralympic Winter Games Ever

History was made Friday night inside a 2,000-year-old Roman amphitheatre. The 2026 Winter Paralympics officially opened at the Arena di Verona on March 6, 2026, in a spectacular ceremony titled "Life in Motion" — the first Paralympic Opening Ceremony ever held at a UNESCO World Heritage site. The Milano Cortina 2026 Paralympic Winter Games will feature a record-breaking 611 Para athletes from 55 delegations, surpassing the competitor record set at PyeongChang 2018, competing across six sports. Competition runs through March 15.

2026 Winter Paralympics Opening Ceremony: Life in Motion at Verona Arena

The Milano Cortina 2026 Paralympic Winter Games were officially opened at the 2,000-year-old Arena di Verona on Friday, March 6. "Life in Motion" was the theme of the Opening Ceremony, just as the Olympic Closing Ceremony 12 days earlier had also used the Verona Arena as its centerpiece.

The Opening Ceremony was designed with a focus on contemporary art, highlighting the evolution of culture, language, technology, music, and more across generations. The celebration took inspiration from several Italian artists, from Leonardo da Vinci to sculptor Jago, to painter and writer Emilio Isgrò, who created a work on site.

There were musical renditions of Italian classics including "Volare," while a modern interpretation of the famed tragedy Romeo and Juliet — which was set in Verona — took place on the main stage. The national anthem was performed by rising Italian star Mimì, who was raised in Lombardy.

Paralympic Winter Games 2026 Opening Ceremony: Two Flames, Two Cities

One of the most visually stunning new traditions introduced at the 2026 Winter Paralympics was a dual cauldron lighting never before seen in Paralympic history. For the first time in Paralympic history, two flames were lit simultaneously — one at the Arco della Pace in Milan and one at Piazza Dibona in Cortina d'Ampezzo, each celebrating the dual cities of the Paralympic Games.

The Cauldrons pay homage to the sun as the primary source of life, energy, and renewal. Designed by Marco Balich in collaboration with Lida Castelli and Paolo Fantin, they are made of aeronautical aluminium and feature a dynamic opening and closing movement inspired by the geometric interlacings of Leonardo da Vinci's famous Knots — a tribute to his historical connection with Milan.

The two cauldrons located at the Arco della Pace in Milano and in Piazza Dibona in Cortina d'Ampezzo were lit at around 9:30 p.m. local time, inaugurating the Winter Paralympic Games. The braziers will remain lit throughout the entire Paralympic Winter Games and will be extinguished on March 15 during the Closing Ceremony in Cortina d'Ampezzo.

Team USA Flagbearers and Snoop Dogg's Pep Talk

Sled hockey player Josh Pauls and Para alpine skier Laurie Stephens are the flag bearers for Team USA at the Opening Ceremony. Both athletes bring storied Paralympic legacies to their role.

Josh Pauls said of the honor: "To be selected as a flag bearer is such a great honor. It is an honor that's really special just because it's done by your peers. To do this in the country my grandfather was born in and to be able to carry the U.S. flag in the country he was able to come to and make a life for himself is what America's all about."

Official United States hype man Snoop Dogg had three words for the 72 American athletes ahead of the Opening Ceremony: "Let's do this."

Canadian flagbearer Tyler McGregor is regarded as one of the most successful Para ice hockey players in the world. "It's such an incredible honor. I was shocked to receive that call. I was filled with pride and emotion," he said.

2026 Winter Paralympics Events, Sports, and Venues

Para athletes will compete across six sports at the 2026 Winter Paralympics: Para alpine skiing, Para biathlon, Para cross-country skiing, Para ice hockey, Para snowboard, and wheelchair curling — with 79 total medal events spread across five competition venues in three clusters.

Competition in wheelchair curling began on March 4 — two days before the Opening Ceremony — due to the curling venue being required for the Closing Ceremony. The Games will close at the Cortina Curling Olympic Stadium on March 15, the same venue that staged the Opening Ceremony of the 1956 Olympic Winter Games.

Para alpine skiing's 30 medal events represent the most of any sport at the 2026 Winter Paralympics, with Austria leading the alpine medal table but facing fierce competition from across the globe.

Russia and Belarus Controversy: Ukraine Boycotts Opening Ceremony

The 2026 Winter Paralympics have not been without political tension. On February 17, it was reported that six Russian athletes and four Belarusian athletes across alpine skiing, cross-country, and snowboard had been awarded invitations by the Bipartite Commission, allowing them to compete in the Games. Among those invited was Russian skier Alexey Bugaev, a three-time Paralympic gold medalist.

The decision was met with condemnation from Ukraine and its European allies, who considered it inappropriate for Russia and Belarus to return to international sport amid the still-ongoing Russian invasion of Ukraine. Ukrainian sports minister Matvii Bidnyi announced that his officials would boycott the Games' Opening Ceremony and other events in protest, explaining that "when the Russian flag is raised on the international stage, it becomes part of Russia's propaganda machine."

Where to Watch the 2026 Winter Paralympics in the US

The Opening Ceremony aired live on USA Network and streamed on Peacock and NBC Olympics platforms on Friday, March 6. A replay presentation airs on NBC in primetime on Saturday, March 7 at 8:00 p.m. ET. IPC President Andrew Parsons summed up the moment from the Arena di Verona stage: "Today, Italy once again stands at the heart of Paralympic history as we celebrate 50 years of the Paralympic Winter Games. From 1976 to 2026, these Paralympic Winter Games will honour our past, celebrate our present and shape a more inclusive future." The 2026 Winter Paralympics run through March 15 — with 79 gold medals still to be decided across the Italian Alps.
