Rory McIlroy Withdraws from Arnold Palmer Invitational Before Saturday Tee Time

Rory McIlroy has withdrawn from the Arnold Palmer Invitational just ahead of his scheduled tee time on Saturday. This decision came after he experienced discomfort in his lower back during a gym warm-up. The incident was reported by Golf Channel’s Todd Lewis.

Details of the Withdrawal

McIlroy was preparing for his third round of the tournament at Bay Hill Club and Lodge when the back issue arose. Traditionally, he practices putting before heading to the driving range. However, on this occasion, he went straight to hit balls on the practice tee.

After a brief session, he decided to withdraw from the tournament. He was seen leaving the practice area around 12:30 p.m. ET, approximately 30 minutes prior to his 12:55 p.m. pairing with Ryan Fox. Following his departure from the range, he collected his belongings and exited through a backdoor.

Rory McIlroy’s Statement

In a statement, McIlroy explained the situation: “While warming up in the gym this morning, I felt a small twinge in my back. As I started hitting balls on the range before the round, it worsened and developed into muscle spasms in my lower back. Unfortunately, I’m not able to continue and have to withdraw. I was excited to compete this weekend. I wish the Arnold Palmer Invitational a great finish and look forward to being back next year.”

Historical Context of Withdrawals

This marks only the third time in McIlroy’s professional career that he has withdrawn mid-tournament. His previous withdrawals occurred at:

  • 2009 Nedbank Challenge due to flu and food poisoning.
  • 2013 Honda Classic, where he withdrew after struggling with wisdom tooth pain and mental challenges.

Despite feeling capable of playing, McIlroy chose to prioritize his health and withdrew as a precautionary measure. He is scheduled to defend his Players Championship title next week at TPC Sawgrass.
