Trent McDuffie Joins Rams with Historic Contract After Chiefs Trade
Trent McDuffie, a former cornerback for the Kansas City Chiefs, has officially joined the Los Angeles Rams. The Rams secured McDuffie with a historic four-year contract extension worth $124 million, making him the highest-paid cornerback in NFL history. This move follows McDuffie’s trade from the Chiefs, where he was a significant player for four seasons.
Contract Details and Financial Impact
McDuffie’s new deal comes after the Chiefs traded him in exchange for four draft picks, including a first-round pick for 2026. Previously, McDuffie was set to become an unrestricted free agent in 2027 when his rookie contract expired. For the 2026 season, he will account for $13.63 million against the Rams’ salary cap.
The Rams currently have a salary cap of $278.4 million entering free agency, as reported by Spotrac. Before securing McDuffie, the team had $133 million already allocated for the 2027 salary cap. The Rams entered the offseason with over $40 million in available cap space, allowing them to target McDuffie to strengthen their defense.
Previous Season Performance
During the 2023 season, McDuffie showcased exceptional talent, being recognized as an All-Pro player. He significantly contributed to the Chiefs’ defense, including seven postseason passes defensed that helped the team secure a second consecutive Super Bowl appearance. In the 2025 season, he recorded 63 tackles, along with a sack, forced fumble, and interception in just 13 games. Unfortunately, a knee injury sidelined him in early December.
Challenges Facing the Rams’ Defense
The Rams faced challenges last season, particularly in their secondary. They ranked 19th in Pro Football Focus’ coverage grade from Week 13 onward and struggled defensively during an NFC title game loss to the Seattle Seahawks. The addition of McDuffie is expected to bolster this unit and improve their overall performance next season.
Looking Ahead
As McDuffie prepares to turn 26 at the start of the 2026 season, the Rams are banking on his long-term commitment to enhance their defense. With hopes of constructing a formidable team, the Rams are aiming for a significant postseason run and aspirations to compete in Super Bowl LXI next February.
