Key Financial Sponsors Withdraw a Day Before Noma L.A. Pop-Up Launch

Key financial sponsors have withdrawn from the upcoming Noma Los Angeles pop-up, which is set to begin on Wednesday in Silver Lake. This decision comes after serious allegations of abuse were levied against co-founder René Redzepi.

Withdrawal of Sponsors

On Tuesday, representatives from American Express, Resy, and Blackbird confirmed their withdrawal from the event. The news first emerged from Expedite, a newsletter focusing on technology and hospitality.

Allegations Against René Redzepi

Reports surfaced of physical, verbal, and psychological abuse linked to Redzepi, based on insights from 35 former employees. These allegations span from 2009 to 2017 and were detailed in a recent New York Times investigation.

Continued Controversy

  • Jason Ignacio White, former leader of Noma’s fermentation lab, has shared his experiences online.
  • Protests are organized by White and advocacy group One Fair Wage, starting Wednesday at the Silver Lake premises.
  • The protests focus on calling for wage increases in the hospitality sector and accountability for Redzepi’s actions.

Statements from Sponsors

Blackbird, initially set to host dining experiences over four nights, has canceled its reservations. Founder Ben Leventhal stated, “Rene’s past practices… were unacceptable and abhorrent.” He emphasized the importance of prioritizing the Los Angeles restaurant community and supporting affected workers.

In addition, Leventhal mentioned all proceeds from Blackbird’s ticket sales will go to organizations supporting hourly wage workers in the hospitality industry.

Refunds and Current Status

American Express and Resy, having previously secured multiple “card member nights,” announced that guests could receive refunds if they chose to cancel their reservations. Noma L.A. continues to list Cadillac as the official vehicle for the residency, although Cadillac representatives have not commented on the situation.
