Kelly Clarkson Criticizes ‘American Idol’ for Misleading Prize Claims
Kelly Clarkson, the inaugural winner of American Idol, has publicly criticized the show for misleading prize claims. Over 23 years ago, Clarkson was promised a car as part of her grand prize but never received it. She shared this revelation during a recent episode of The Kelly Clarkson Show.
American Idol Prize Discrepancies
In her conversation with Rob Rausch, the champion of The Traitors Season 4, Clarkson expressed her frustration. Rausch mentioned awaiting his $220,800 prize money, prompting Clarkson to draw a parallel to her own experience. She noted, “Oh, you win a million dollars,” referring to the advertised cash prize that was never realized in its entirety.
Unfulfilled Promises
Initially, the prize for winning American Idol included a recording contract valued at $1 million. Following her victory, Clarkson signed with RCA Records, associated with 19 Recordings. Despite her immense success, including numerous top-ten hits and prestigious awards, one promised item remained absent.
- Car Prize: Clarkson revealed, “They said you get a car… and then, no! I did not get a car!”
- Comparison with Others: Other contestants, such as Clay Aiken and Carrie Underwood, received cars as part of their prizes.
- Clarkson’s Reaction: She humorously recalled being upset when Aiken mentioned that he and his mom had received cars.
Clarkson’s Career and Future Plans
Following her brief hiatus, Clarkson returned to her talk show on March 9. She announced that The Kelly Clarkson Show will conclude after its seventh season this fall. Clarkson aims to prioritize her children, River and Remy, with her late ex-husband, Brandon Blackstock.
Reflecting on her career, Clarkson stated, “Stepping away from the daily schedule will allow me to prioritize my kids, which feels necessary and right for this next chapter of our lives.” This decision underscores her commitment to family as she transitions into a new phase of life.
