“Top Films Deserving Best Casting Oscar, According to Directors”

With the introduction of the Best Casting Oscar, casting directors are finally receiving recognition for their crucial role in filmmaking. This new category presents a challenge for predictors, as historical data is limited. To build a dataset, I consulted with casting directors from the Casting Society, who graciously participated in a poll. In total, 92 casting directors contributed by ranking their top five films for best casting from 2010 to 2025.

Top Films Deserving Best Casting Oscar According to Directors

The results of this survey not only provide insights into past potential winners but also highlight the importance of casting in films. Here are the films that would have been nominated for the Best Casting Oscar each year.

2010: ‘Inglourious Basterds’

This film was praised for its powerful ensemble cast. Casting directors Jenny Jue and Johanna Ray successfully selected actors to embody the complex roles of Nazi hunters, leading to recognition by the Screen Actors Guild and Critics’ Choice Awards.

2011: ‘The Social Network’

Amid competition from ‘The King’s Speech’ and ‘Black Swan’, ‘The Social Network’ emerged as the favorite among casting directors. Notably, ‘The Fighter’ failed to make an impact in this category, despite its multiple acting Oscars.

2012: ‘The Help’

In a competitive year, ‘The Help’ took the lead in casting, narrowly defeating ‘Bridesmaids’, which showcased an impressive comedic ensemble. This year reflected the struggle of comedies in the Oscar race.

2013: ‘Argo’

Led by Lora Kennedy, the casting for ‘Argo’ was pivotal to its success, although its director did not receive a nomination. Another standout was ‘Beasts of the Southern Wild’, which captured attention for discovering a young talent in Quvenzhané Wallis.

2014: ’12 Years a Slave’

Francine Maisler’s outstanding casting in this film secured her a win, marking her first of two consecutive victories. Her future nomination for ‘Sinners’ adds further weight to her impressive career.

2015: ‘Birdman’

Francine Maisler’s casting in ‘Birdman’ earned acclaim, resulting in a tight race against ‘Boyhood’, but ‘Birdman’ emerged victorious at the Oscars.

2016: ‘Spotlight’

A close call, with only a few votes separating ‘Spotlight’ from ‘Room’, highlighted the competitive nature of casting in this year. The results reflect just how narrow the margins can be at the Oscars.

2017: ‘Moonlight’

‘Moonlight’ received overwhelming support among casting directors, hinting at its eventual success despite other strong contenders in the mix.

2018: ‘Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri’

The year saw no clear standout, yet Sarah Halley Finn won for her work in ‘Three Billboards’, showcasing the competitive casting landscape.

2019: ‘Black Panther’

‘Black Panther’ achieved a remarkable victory despite being outside the Best Picture race, highlighting the importance of casting in the film’s overall success.

2020: ‘Once Upon a Time In Hollywood’

This film’s victory underscored the correlation between acting nominations and casting recognition at the Oscars, with ‘Parasite’ closely trailing behind.

2021: ‘Nomadland’

Controversy surrounded ‘Nomadland’ due to its mix of actors and non-professionals. Despite this, casting directors acknowledged the work behind the film, granting it the Oscar.

2022: ‘CODA’

Had Best Casting existed, it might have changed perceptions of the Oscar race, as ‘CODA’ gained recognition while ‘The Power of the Dog’ missed the cut in this fictional scenario.

2023: ‘Everything Everywhere All at Once’

Winning three acting Oscars is a rare achievement, and this film’s casting was pivotal to its success. The industry recognizes the integral role of casting directors in creating standout films.

2024: ‘Oppenheimer’

While ‘Oppenheimer’ appeared a strong contender, it faced stiff competition, with casting for this film becoming synonymous with critical success under the direction of John Papsidera.

2025: ‘Wicked’

This year’s race for best casting could become thrilling, with strong contenders putting forth remarkable performances. The competition continues to highlight the significance of casting in filmmaking.

As we anticipate future Academy Awards, the Best Casting Oscar is expected to align closely with Best Picture winners, reflecting the vital role of ensemble performances in cinema.
