Kentucky head coach Mark Pope framed Thursday as a significant challenge, pointing to Missouri’s front-line size and physicality.
“They’re really good. They’ve been playing great basketball, ” Pope said. “They have tremendous size on their front line. They’re so physical and so big and so skilled actually, can hurt you in a lot of different ways. ”
Pope also referenced the first meeting’s closing sequence and Missouri’s ability to make plays late.
“They made shots against us when we played them at home, ” Pope said. “Made some plays late that really hurt us. They’re a good team. Really well-coached. Coach (Dennis Gates) does a great job. It will be a great challenge, just like every game in this tournament is going to be a challenge. ”
Individually, Kentucky enters the SEC Tournament with Oweh receiving All-Southeastern Conference second-team honors and Malachi Moreno earning an all-freshman selection. Oweh averaged 18. 2 points entering the SEC Tournament and recorded double figures in 30 of 31 regular-season games, including 16 games with 20 or more points. Moreno started 25 of 31 games entering the SEC Tournament and led the team in rebounding and blocks.
Missouri’s postseason objective is also clearly stated: the Tigers aim to add to a resume for the NCAA Tournament. Missouri lists a national ranking of No. 39 in Wins Above Bubble, along with 10 combined wins against quad one and quad two opponents, and zero losses against Q3/4 opponents.
If Missouri advances from Thursday’s game, the Tigers would move on to play top-seeded Florida on Friday at noon ET in the quarterfinal round.
