Cowboys’ Free Agency Updates and Highlights

The Dallas Cowboys have made significant moves in their free agency. The team has released veteran quarterback Will Grier and added key players, including safety Jalen Thompson.

Cowboys Release Will Grier

At 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, the Cowboys parted ways with quarterback Will Grier. Grier spent the 2025 season as a third-string quarterback on the practice squad, behind Dak Prescott and Joe Milton.

This marked Grier’s second tenure with Dallas. He was initially waived in 2023 but returned in November 2024 after signing a futures deal in January. With Grier’s release, he becomes a free agent once again.

Dallas Quarterback Roster Updates

The Cowboys now maintain three quarterbacks on their roster:

  • Dak Prescott
  • Joe Milton
  • Sam Howell, who officially signed with the team on Thursday

Signing of Safety Jalen Thompson

Also on Thursday, safety Jalen Thompson signed his contract at The Star in Frisco. Thompson, a former Arizona Cardinals player, spoke about his experience with the Cowboys.

He emphasized his versatility on the field, stating, “I can play nickel, corner, free safety, strong safety, wherever they need me.” Thompson is eager to contribute to the team’s success.

Recent Trades and Draft Capital

In addition to Grier’s release and Thompson’s signing, the Cowboys executed two trades. On Wednesday, they sent defensive tackles Osa Odighizuwa and Solomon Thomas to other teams in exchange for draft picks.

Specifically, the Cowboys acquired a third-round pick for Odighizuwa and swapped a position in the seventh round with the Tennessee Titans. These trades have increased Dallas’ draft picks to nine, enhancing their strategy for the upcoming NFL Draft.

Current Draft Picks for the Cowboys

The trades allow Dallas to now have three picks within the Top 100 selections:

  • Two first-round picks
  • One third-round pick

The Cowboys are positioned well as they prepare for the NFL Draft, aiming to make impactful selections that will strengthen the roster.
