Eliot Wolf Analyzes Patriots’ Free Agent Moves and Future Plans

The New England Patriots are actively evaluating their roster and potential trade opportunities as the NFL offseason progresses. Eliot Wolf, the Patriots’ executive director, has shared insights into the team’s strategies regarding key players and positional needs.

Eliot Wolf’s Perspective on Maxx Crosby

The Patriots expressed interest in edge rusher Maxx Crosby, who is available after a potential trade to the Baltimore Ravens collapsed due to medical issues. Crosby, who will turn 29 in August, was a top target for many teams this offseason.

“We make a lot of exploratory calls,” Wolf noted. He emphasized that the organization is always on the lookout for players who can enhance the team’s performance.

Potential Trade for A.J. Brown

In addition to Crosby, Wolf discussed the possibility of acquiring Eagles receiver A.J. Brown. Although the Eagles have no immediate pressure to trade Brown before June 1, the Patriots are open to exploring all options to improve their roster.

  • Trading Brown before June 1 results in $43.4 million in dead money.
  • Post-June 1, the Eagles would face $16.4 million in dead money but could free up $7.04 million in cap space.

Wolf stated, “We’ll explore anything that we think can help the team,” but there are no pressing deadlines for the Patriots regarding this potential move.

Revisiting Stefon Diggs

Wolf also addressed the release of wide receiver Stefon Diggs, who is currently a free agent. He acknowledged that while various factors influenced Diggs’s departure, the door remains open for a potential return at a more manageable contract.

Addressing Offensive Line Needs

The Patriots are focusing on bolstering their offensive line. Wolf mentioned the recent struggles of rookie left tackle Will Campbell during the postseason. After evaluating available options, the team seems committed to giving Campbell another chance in that position.

To strengthen their offensive line further, the Patriots have signed Alijah Vera-Tucker, a versatile player with the ability to excel at multiple positions. Wolf highlighted Vera-Tucker as “one of the best guards in the NFL,” despite his injury history.

Future Plans for Cornerback Christian Gonzalez

Wolf reiterated the team’s intent to extend the contract of cornerback Christian Gonzalez. “It’s no secret that we’d like to keep Christian Gonzalez,” he confirmed, indicating preparations for negotiations are underway.

As the offseason progresses, the Patriots remain focused on improving their roster, whether through trades or strategic signings to enhance their competitiveness in the league.
