David Gilmour’s ‘Black Strat’ Auctioned for $14.55 Million

A historic moment occurred on March 9, 2023, when David Gilmour’s iconic “Black Strat” was auctioned for a record-breaking $14.55 million at Christie’s in New York. This sale marked a significant milestone, making it the most expensive guitar ever sold at auction.

The Legacy of the Black Strat

Gilmour’s “Black Strat” holds a special place in music history. It played a crucial role in the creation of several seminal Pink Floyd albums, including:

  • The Dark Side of the Moon (1973)
  • Wish You Were Here (1975)
  • Animals (1977)
  • The Wall (1979)

This guitar was instrumental in recording classic tracks such as “Money,” “Shine On You Crazy Diamond,” and Gilmour’s magnificent solo in “Comfortably Numb.”

Previous Record and Auction Details

Before this auction, the previous record for the world’s most expensive guitar was held by Kurt Cobain’s 1959 Martin D-18E, which sold for $6 million in 2020. Gilmour’s guitar was expected to fetch between $2 million and $4 million, but demand far exceeded projections.

Jim Irsay, owner of the Indianapolis Colts, acquired the “Black Strat” in June 2019 for $5.245 million at a Christie’s auction, then holding the record for a guitar at that time.

Gilmour’s Reflections

In a conversation with Rolling Stone, Gilmour expressed his attachment to the guitar, stating it had been “very good” to him. Yet, he felt it was time for the guitar to serve another purpose. He commented on the joy his guitars had brought him and emphasized the importance of their legacy.

Other Notable Sales at the Auction

Also notable in the auction was Jerry Garcia’s legendary guitar, “Tiger,” which fetched an impressive $11.56 million. Garcia played this custom-made instrument from 1979 to 1989, including during his final performance with the Grateful Dead on July 9, 1995.

The Jim Irsay Collection Auction

The “Jim Irsay Collection: Icons of Popular Culture” auction ran from March 3 to March 17, 2023. It presented one of the most remarkable assemblages of musical memorabilia, curated over decades by Irsay. A portion of the proceeds from these sales is dedicated to charitable causes Irsay supported throughout his life.

This auction reflects the lasting impact of music history and the significance of instruments that have shaped the soundscapes of generations.
