NHL, NHLPA Unveil Long-Term Strategy for Growth in Germany

The National Hockey League (NHL) and the NHL Players’ Association (NHLPA) have revealed a comprehensive strategy aimed at enhancing the NHL’s presence in Germany. This initiative, designed for long-term growth, focuses on increasing youth participation and engaging fans throughout the country.

Key Elements of the Growth Strategy

This joint endeavor includes several vital components:

  • Investment in grassroots programs to promote hockey.
  • Increased fan engagement through various content initiatives.
  • Long-term partnerships to support the NHL’s initiatives in Germany.
  • Scheduling regular-season NHL games in Germany, starting with the 2026 NHL Global Series.

Upcoming NHL Games in Germany

Beginning in December 2026, the NHL will host two regular-season games between the Ottawa Senators and the Chicago Blackhawks at the PSD Bank Dome in Düsseldorf. This marks a significant milestone, as these will be the second and third regular-season games played in Germany since 2011.

The previous match took place on October 8, 2011, featuring the Buffalo Sabres against the Los Angeles Kings in Berlin. The NHL’s commitment includes staging games in Germany for at least the next three seasons.

The Importance of Homegrown Talent

The December matches will not only showcase international rivalry but also highlight the talents of German players. Tim Stützle, a standout for the Senators, has been instrumental in raising Germany’s profile in hockey, recording 70 points in the 2025-2026 season. He expressed excitement about the NHL’s commitment to developing youth hockey in Germany.

Leon Draisaitl, another prominent German athlete, has achieved over 1,000 career points and has made notable contributions, including leading Team Germany at the Olympics. Moritz Seider, the 2022 Calder Trophy winner, represents the next generation of German talent.

Hockey Day in Germany

As part of its initiatives, the NHL will debut Hockey Day in Germany on March 13-14. This event aims to engage fans through interactive hockey experiences, e-gaming competitions, and live game broadcasts.

Germany will be the third country this season to host an NHL Hockey Day event, following Sweden and Czechia. Finland is set to host an event in late March.

Grassroots and Community Engagement

The NHL is also committed to enhancing grassroots hockey through initiatives like NHL Street Hockey. This program, aimed at schoolchildren, promotes healthy lifestyles and pathways into hockey through local club partnerships. By the end of the 2025-26 season, NHL Street Hockey will expand to seven countries.

Expanding Global Presence

The NHL’s plans go beyond the ice rink. With the establishment of its first European office in Zurich, the league is strategically positioned to grow its global footprint. Upcoming events, such as the World Cup of Hockey 2028, will further amplify its international reach.

This growth strategy not only emphasizes the development of the sport but also signifies the NHL’s dedication to fostering a new generation of hockey players and fans in Germany and across Europe.
