Nancy Guthrie Update Today: Day 42 — FBI Visits El Charro Restaurant, Reward Unclaimed, Suspect Could Strike Again
Nancy Guthrie Update Today

Saturday, March 14, 2026 marks Day 42 in the search for Nancy Guthrie — now entering the seventh week with no arrest, no named suspect, and a $1.2 million reward that no one has come forward to claim. The latest Nancy Guthrie update today includes the FBI's quiet investigation of a Mexican restaurant where she filmed a Today show segment months before her disappearance, a retired agent's theory on why the reward remains unclaimed, and the ongoing public safety warning that the kidnapper could strike again.

FBI Investigates El Charro Restaurant: Were She Being Watched During Today Segment?

Investigators went back to some of the places Nancy and Savannah Guthrie visited for a Today show feature filmed in November 2025, including El Charro, the oldest family-owned Mexican restaurant in the country. The FBI visited the restaurant, asking workers whether anyone there looked suspicious when Savannah was filming.

El Charro is where Savannah sat down with Nancy and her sister Annie to share a meal on camera. Nancy told Savannah what drew her to Tucson: "It's so wonderful. Just the air, the quality of life. It's laid back and gentle." The FBI's visit suggests investigators are now working backward through Nancy's public footprint — examining every place she appeared on television months before her abduction.

Why the $1.2 Million Reward Has Not Been Claimed

Retired FBI Special Agent Steve Moore offered the most direct explanation yet for why nobody has come forward to claim the reward: "I think the reason is most likely the fact that the only people who have knowledge of this are culpable." Moore added that the perpetrators have apparently kept their actions from other people, making an outside witness with claimable knowledge extremely unlikely.

Moore said that if the worst outcome is true and Nancy is no longer alive, there is not going to be a good deal available for an accomplice who comes forward — making the risk of self-incrimination outweigh the reward money in the mind of anyone with firsthand knowledge.

Sheriff: "Absolutely" the Suspect Could Strike Again

Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos appeared on the Today show Friday, where NBC's Liz Kreutz asked directly whether the suspect could strike again. Nanos replied: "Well, absolutely, absolutely. I mean, you know, criminal minds are criminal minds." He confirmed investigators have a theory of motive and believe the attack was targeted — but stopped short of providing specifics to protect the investigation's integrity.

Sheriff Nanos told NBC News: "We believe we know why he did this, and we believe that it was targeted. But we can't — we're not 100 percent sure of that, so it would be silly to tell people: 'Yeah, don't worry about it. You're not his target.' Don't think for a minute that because it happened to the Guthrie family, you're safe."

Evidence Review Ongoing: Videos, Images, Laboratory Materials

The Pima County Sheriff's Department released a formal statement Friday: "The Pima County Sheriff's Department continues to analyze various forms of evidence in the Nancy Guthrie case, including material from laboratories as well as images and videos captured by cameras."

Investigators have confirmed bloodstains at the scene were Nancy's. Multiple ransom notes of undetermined origin demanded cryptocurrency payment with two deadlines already passed. The FBI released doorbell camera footage on February 10 showing a masked male approximately 5-foot-9 or 5-foot-10 carrying a 25-liter Ozark Trail Hiker Pack backpack on Nancy's porch the night she disappeared. That individual has not been publicly identified.

Surveillance Footage Request: Anyone Within 2 Miles of Catalina Foothills Home

The sheriff's department asked anyone within a 2-mile radius of Nancy Guthrie's Catalina Foothills home to submit any footage from January 1 through February 2, 2026 that they consider out of the ordinary or important. Investigators are specifically looking for footage that could help identify the suspect or a vehicle used in the abduction.

Savannah Guthrie's Return to the Today Studio

Savannah Guthrie stopped by the Today studio to thank her colleagues. A Today spokesperson confirmed Savannah plans on eventually returning to the show but has not set a timeline. The family's $1 million reward remains active. Anyone with information is urged to call the FBI tip line at 1-800-CALL-FBI immediately.
