Colts Present Offer to Trey Hendrickson
The Indianapolis Colts have made significant moves in free agency, primarily focusing on re-signing key players and pursuing defensive talent. This week, the team re-signed quarterback Daniel Jones and wide receiver Alec Pierce in a deal valued at up to $204 million.
Colts Pursue Trey Hendrickson
During this busy period, the Colts also targeted defensive end Trey Hendrickson. According to ESPN’s Stephen Holder, the Colts presented an offer approximating $25 million annually. However, this proposal fell short of the Baltimore Ravens’ winning bid, which was a four-year contract worth $112 million.
Hendrickson’s Transfer to Baltimore
Hendrickson’s signing with the Ravens occurred shortly after a failed trade involving linebacker Maxx Crosby from the Raiders. If the Crosby trade had been successful, the Colts might have had a better chance of landing Hendrickson. Ravens General Manager Eric DeCosta expressed interest in acquiring both Hendrickson and Crosby.
Potential Reunion with Lou Anarumo
Had he signed with Indianapolis, Hendrickson would have reunited with the Colts’ defensive coordinator, Lou Anarumo. The two previously collaborated in Cincinnati from 2021 to 2024, where Hendrickson amassed an impressive 57 sacks and received four Pro Bowl selections.
Colts’ Defensive Strategy Moving Forward
The Colts had initially shown interest in Hendrickson during his preseason holdout last summer. They were also contenders before the trade deadline on November 4, but the Cincinnati Bengals opted to retain him for the rest of the season. Unfortunately, Hendrickson’s performance in 2023 was limited due to a hip injury, which sidelined him after October 26. He concluded the season with four sacks in just seven games.
Despite the disappointment of missing out on Hendrickson, the Colts are adjusting their defensive lineup. Last season, the team’s defense ranked 15th in total sacks but struggled with a pass rush win rate, finishing 30th overall. The Colts have since lost edge rushers Kwity Paye and Samson Ebukam to free agency. Paye signed a three-year deal worth $48 million with the Raiders, while Ebukam accepted an undisclosed contract with the Falcons.
New Additions to the Defensive Roster
In a bid to strengthen their pass rush, the Colts signed Arden Key to a two-year deal valued at up to $20 million and Micheal Clemons on a three-year contract worth $17.5 million. While Key and Clemons may not match Hendrickson’s elite status, they are expected to contribute effectively alongside top edge rusher Laiatu Latu.
