ElevenLabs to Restore 1 Million Voices with AI at SXSW 2026
At the 2026 South by Southwest (SXSW) festival, ElevenLabs introduced an ambitious initiative aimed at restoring the voices of individuals suffering from permanent voice loss. This program, the 1 Million Voices Initiative, aims to help one million people regain their ability to communicate through advanced AI technology. ElevebLabs partnered with Rebecca Gayheart Dane, widow of actor Eric Dane, to promote this groundbreaking project during a panel discussion.
1 Million Voices Initiative
Mati Staniszewski, co-founder of ElevenLabs, emphasized the need for participants worldwide. He invited attendees to connect individuals affected by voice loss due to illnesses such as cancer. Interested individuals can express their interest through an online form.
Inspired by Loss
The initiative is especially poignant for Gayheart Dane, whose late husband Eric Dane struggled with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) before passing away in February 2026. Dane had previously collaborated with ElevenLabs, utilizing their services to clone his voice. Gayheart Dane stated, “Our voices are such an important part of who we are.” She recounted the emotional impact of regaining her husband’s voice through the company’s technology, ensuring their daughters would always remember him.
Panel Discussion Highlights
- Panel Participants: Rebecca Gayheart Dane, Mati Staniszewski, Yvonne Johnson.
- Focus: Voice restoration through AI technology.
Johnson, a British woman living with ALS, shared her own experience with voice loss and how ElevenLabs’ technology restored her voice, complete with her North London accent. She vividly described the joy brought by the ability to communicate in her own voice, saying, “I simply type what I want to say… and my beautiful voice comes through.”
The Positive Potential of AI
During the discussion, the ethical concerns surrounding artificial intelligence were acknowledged. Topics such as deepfakes, misinformation, and copyright infringement were highlighted. However, Gayheart Dane advocated for recognizing the positive uses of AI technology. “This is the best example of using it for good,” she remarked, encouraging others in the AI field to pursue beneficial applications of their capabilities.
Collaborations and Documentaries
To expand its reach, ElevenLabs is collaborating with various accessibility nonprofits, including the Scott-Morgan Foundation. They also premiered the docuseries, 11 Voices, at SXSW. This series showcases the stories of individuals impacted by voice loss and highlights how the 1 Million Voices Initiative has transformed their lives.
The journey of technology and empathy continues as ElevenLabs works diligently to restore voices and reconnect individuals with their identities, proving that advancements in AI can foster positive change.
