Roots Picnic shakes up Philadelphia: JAŸ-Z confirmed as rare headliner at new Belmont Plateau venue

roots picnic is returning to Philadelphia with a major shift: JAŸ-Z and The Roots are set for a rare, high-profile performance together. The two-day event is scheduled for May 30–31 at Belmont Plateau within Fairmount Park, with JAŸ-Z slated to close the first day on Saturday, May 30. Tickets are set to go on sale Tuesday, March 18 at 10: 00 AM ET, while the rest of the lineup has not yet been announced.

JAŸ-Z and The Roots lock in a Saturday closing set

JAŸ-Z has confirmed his appearance with Questlove and The Roots at the annual festival, signaling an unusually prominent live booking for the rapper, who has only performed live on a handful of occasions since his 4. 44 Tour in 2017. Organizers say he will close the first day of the May 30–31 event, putting Saturday’s finale squarely on a JAŸ-Z and The Roots collaboration.

The announcement also arrives with a notable detail: JAŸ-Z has apparently added an umlaut to the spelling of his name.

New venue: Belmont Plateau in Fairmount Park

The festival is moving to Belmont Plateau, a section within Fairmount Park, marking a venue change for this year’s Philadelphia edition. Shawn Gee, longtime manager of The Roots and President of Live Nation Urban, framed the move and the headliner booking as major milestones for the team behind the event.

“Moving the Roots Picnic to Belmont Plateau and bringing JAŸ-Z and The Roots together to perform are both bucket-list moments for us, ” Gee said. He added that after meeting with Philadelphia Mayor Cherelle Parker and hearing her vision for “Philadelphia 250, ” the team felt inspired “to dream even bigger, ” while also thanking Commissioner Susan Slawson, Jazelle Jones, and others who helped support the shift.

Tickets: on-sale timing set; full lineup still pending

The most time-sensitive detail for fans is the on-sale clock. Tickets will go on sale Tuesday, March 18 at 10: 00 AM ET. Event organizers have not yet announced additional performers for the two-day bill.

In the lead-up, the move to a new location follows what was described as “countless complaints” from fans who attended the 2025 festival at The Mann, one factor cited in connection with this year’s venue change.

Quick context on the JAŸ-Z and The Roots live history

The Roots have a documented performance history with JAŸ-Z, including serving as his backing band on his 2001 MTV Unplugged album. They also later played with him in 2003 at New York’s Madison Square Garden and again at Radio City Music Hall in celebration of the 10th anniversary of Reasonable Doubt.

What’s next for Roots Picnic announcements

With the on-sale time set for March 18 at 10: 00 AM ET and only one headlining slot publicly detailed so far, the immediate next test will be demand for tickets ahead of a still-to-be-revealed undercard. For now, the confirmed headline is clear: roots picnic is betting big on a new Philadelphia venue and a rare JAŸ-Z appearance alongside The Roots when the festival opens its May 30–31 run.
