Dune Part 3 Trailer Drops: Timothée Chalamet, Robert Pattinson as Scytale, and Anya Taylor-Joy Lead Epic Conclusion
Dune Part 3

Denis Villeneuve just fired the starting gun on one of the most anticipated finales in modern cinema. The official Dune Part 3 trailer landed on March 17, 2026, sending the internet into overdrive less than 48 hours after Warner Bros. released a wave of character posters. Timothée Chalamet returns as Paul Atreides, Robert Pattinson enters as villain Scytale, and Anya Taylor-Joy steps fully into the Dune universe — all converging for a December showdown.

Dune Part 3 Trailer Released March 17 — What It Shows

The first trailer for Dune Part Three dropped on March 17, opening with Paul Atreides and Chani fantasizing about what they would name their future child — if it is a girl, Ghanima, "because she would need to be strong, like her mother," Paul says.

The film is inspired by Frank Herbert's Dune Messiah and picks up 17 years after Paul defeated the Harkonnens and became Emperor. His true love Chani has left him after he married Princess Irulan for power, and the trailer's opening sequence functions as a flashback foreshadowing the film's conclusion.

Denis Villeneuve Promises Dune Part Three Is More Action-Packed Than Ever

At a trailer launch event held at an AMC theater in Los Angeles the Monday after the Oscars, Villeneuve described the tone of Dune Part Three as fundamentally different from its predecessors. "If the first movie was more of a contemplation, like a boy exploring a new world, and the second one being a war movie, this one is more action-packed and tense," he told the crowd.

Villeneuve added that Paul Atreides is dealing with the consequences of having too much power and is trying to figure out how to get out of this cycle of violence. The director also revealed the film takes place 17 years after the events of Dune Part Two — not the 12 years initially reported.

Robert Pattinson as Scytale — The Dune 3 Villain Explained

Robert Pattinson confirmed his participation in Dune Part Three, with insiders confirming he plays Scytale, a Tleilaxu Face Dancer and the film's central antagonist. Pattinson attended the trailer launch event alongside Zendaya, Anya Taylor-Joy, and Javier Bardem.

Pattinson described Scytale as an unusual character whose allegiances remain deliberately unclear. "You can't really tell whose side he's on. That's kind of what makes him quite interesting," he said, adding that Scytale might even be a good guy — and that the look of the character is quite extraordinary.

Anya Taylor-Joy and the Full Dune Part 3 Cast

Anya Taylor-Joy takes on the expanded role of Alia Atreides, Paul's younger sister, after her brief cameo in Dune Part Two. The full Dune 3 cast also includes Florence Pugh as Princess Irulan, Rebecca Ferguson as Lady Jessica, Javier Bardem as Stilgar, Josh Brolin as Gurney Halleck, Jason Momoa as Duncan Idaho, Léa Seydoux as Lady Margot, and newcomer Isaach De Bankolé as Farok.

Jason Momoa's Duncan Idaho returns despite the warrior dying in the first film. Momoa was present at the trailer event, and the character poster confirms he is listed as Hayt — the ghola clone of Duncan Idaho that features prominently in the Dune Messiah novel.

Dune Messiah — The Book Behind Dune Part Three

Dune Part Three is based on Frank Herbert's 1969 novel Dune Messiah, which serves as the crux of Herbert's own beliefs about leaders and hero worship. The story details a conspiracy to assassinate Paul while he despairs at the state of affairs — still haunted by prescient visions that are clouded for a very specific reason.

Villeneuve co-wrote the screenplay with Brian K. Vaughan, whose involvement was confirmed publicly for the first time with the trailer's release. Hans Zimmer returns to compose the score, having told Variety during Dune Part Two's production that he already knew exactly where the story was going.

Dune Part 3 Release Date — December 18, 2026

Dune Part Three opens in theaters on December 18, 2026 — the same date as Avengers: Doomsday. Both Chalamet and Robert Downey Jr. have already suggested calling the collision "Dunesday," aiming to create a Barbenheimer-style cultural moment.

The first two Dune films earned a combined $1.12 billion at the global box office and won eight Oscars from 15 nominations, including Best Picture nominations for both. With the Dune Part 3 trailer now live and the full cast locked in, December 18 is already shaping up to be one of the biggest single days in box office history.
