Creighton Coach Greg McDermott Retires After 16 Years; Alan Huss Takes Over

Creighton University’s basketball program is witnessing a significant transition as Greg McDermott announces his retirement after 16 impactful years as head coach. His final game will conclude the season during the College Basketball Crown tournament, marking the end of an era for the Bluejays.

Greg McDermott’s Legacy at Creighton

During his tenure, McDermott amassed an impressive record of 365 wins against 188 losses. Overall, he boasts a 514-319 record spanning 25 years as a Division I head coach. He transformed Creighton’s program, leading the team to 14 seasons with over 20 victories and 10 NCAA Tournament appearances.

  • Elite Eight appearance in 2023
  • Sweet 16 appearances in 2021 and 2024

McDermott expressed profound gratitude, reflecting on the support from players, staff, and the Omaha community. Known affectionately as “Mac,” he emphasized his pride in the character displayed by his players, stating, “Witnessing their growth and development was especially gratifying.”

Challenges Faced

McDermott’s time was not without adversity. The program encountered challenges, including:

  • 2019: Assistant coach Preston Murphy involved in an FBI investigation for alleged bribery.
  • 2021: Two years of probation imposed by the NCAA.
  • 2021: McDermott suspended for one game due to racially insensitive remarks to players.

Despite these setbacks, McDermott’s successes ultimately defined his coaching career at Creighton.

Alan Huss Takes Over as Head Coach

Alan Huss, previously McDermott’s right-hand man, will take over as head coach. At 47 years old, Huss has a strong connection to Creighton, having played for the team from 1997 to 2001 and serving as an assistant coach under McDermott from 2017 to 2023. His tenure included a successful stint as head coach at High Point, where he led the team to its first NCAA Tournament appearance in 2025.

Upon his appointment, Huss stated, “I am incredibly honored and humbled to be named the head men’s basketball coach at Creighton University. This University has meant so much to me.” He is excited to take on the new role and continue the legacy established by McDermott.

The transition in leadership marks a pivotal moment for Creighton basketball, as the program prepares to embrace new challenges under Huss’s guidance while honoring McDermott’s contributions that elevated the Bluejays to new heights.
