USATF Expands Women’s Team for World Road Championships After Atlanta Incident

USA Track & Field (USATF) has received approval from World Athletics for an expanded entry for the women’s half marathon at the upcoming 2026 World Athletics Road Running Championships in Copenhagen, Denmark. This decision comes in light of the unfortunate events that transpired during the USATF Half Marathon Championships in Atlanta.

Details of the Expanded Entry

In a significant deviation from the standard entry limit of four athletes, USATF can now enter seven women into the competition. This change allows for the inclusion of three athletes who were unfairly led off course during the Atlanta race. They are:

  • Jessica McClain
  • Emma Grace Hurley
  • Ednah Kurgat

Additionally, the top three official finishers from the Atlanta championship will also be part of the team:

  • Molly Born
  • Carrie Ellwood
  • Annie Rodenfels

An additional athlete will be chosen based on their world rankings as of May 5. While only four athletes can contribute to team scoring, all seven will have the opportunity to earn World Athletics ranking points.

Background of the Incident in Atlanta

During the race in Atlanta, an unexpected incident caused the lead vehicle to direct the leading athletes off course shortly after the 12-mile mark. This occurred due to an injury to a police officer, which regrettably interrupted the race’s integrity. At that time, McClain, Hurley, and Kurgat had established a significant lead and were unable to complete their competition as intended.

Despite this setback, these athletes were honored with an honorary podium placement, were awarded points in the USATF Road Running Circuit, and received prize money from the Atlanta Track Club for their performance.

Team Composition and Guidelines

For the World Championships, Team USATF will consist of four scoring athletes and three non-scoring athletes. The selection of scoring athletes will occur with input from the athletes themselves once the final roster is established and accepted by all team members.

The non-scoring athletes will be recognized as official Team USATF members, eligible for individual ranking points. They will wear a distinct team kit and are prohibited from forming packs with scoring athletes during the competition.

Support and Expenses

USATF will absorb all expenses related to the increased entries. In the event that any non-scoring athlete finishes in a position eligible for a prize, USATF will ensure that corresponding prize money is awarded. The full U.S. team for the World Road Running Championships will be announced following the USATF 1 Mile Championships on April 22 and the USATF 5K Championships on May 2.

The World Athletics Road Running Championships are scheduled for September 19-20, 2026, in Copenhagen, providing a significant opportunity for the seven selected athletes to showcase their talents on a global stage.
