Mr Justice Bennathan, sitting at Snaresbrook Crown Court, described Matvei Rumiantsev as a man “given to jealousy” and criticised him for being “totally unrepentant” and failing to accept blame for the attack. The judge reflected on a letter from Rumiantsev, saying: “That’s a very long way from you facing up to the simple truth of what happened that night. ” Sentencing remarks set out that the evidence showed Rumiantsev repeatedly struck the woman over the course of an hour and dragged her by her hair when she tried to seek help, leaving her believing she “might die. “
Next steps: licence, recall and possible deportation
The judge told Rumiantsev: “That sentence should mean you’re automatically liable to deportation. ” He explained that, if deportation did not proceed for any reason, Rumiantsev would be released on licence after serving 40% of the four-year term and would remain on licence and “subject to recall to custody” if he breached its terms. The defendant was also found not guilty of one count of rape and intentional strangulation relating to the same day, and not guilty of another count of rape and assault alleged to have occurred in November 2024.
