Immediate reaction and brief background

Drew McOnie, director and choreographer, said: “I’m so excited to welcome this astonishing group of performers to Regent’s Park. CATS has always celebrated the unique talents of its performers, and I can’t wait for our audiences to experience this company’s brilliance in this brand-new production. Each of these cast members will play their own special part in creating animalistic harmony under the Jellicle Moon. It’s going to be quite an adventure and we look forward to welcoming you to join us. “

Based on T. S. Eliot’s Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats, the musical follows a tribe of strays and rebels in London who gather under the Jellicle moon hoping one will be chosen for rebirth.

What’s next for the production

The company will open performances on 25 July and run through 12 September, with a press night on 6 August; after the Regent’s Park engagement the production will tour and casting for that tour is to be confirmed. The announcement places gary wilmot centrally among a cast intended to bring a new staging of the score and choreography to open-air audiences in London and beyond.
