Charlize Theron faces a stark contradiction in Netflix’s ‘Apex’: solitude becomes a hunt

Netflix has released the trailer for “Apex, ” a survivalist action-thriller that turns a search for quiet into a fight to stay alive. Charlize Theron stars as Sasha, a grieving woman who heads into the Australian wilderness seeking solace—only to be hunted by a deadly assassin played by Taron Egerton.

What the “Apex” trailer reveals about Charlize Theron’s survival story

The trailer frames “Apex” as a blunt test of endurance with one guiding rule: “hunt or be hunted. ” Theron’s Sasha travels to Wandarra National Park and crosses paths with Egerton’s character at a gas station, where he gives directions. Once she arrives, he is waiting. When Sasha complains that gear has been stolen from her truck, he reveals he took it—setting the pursuit in motion.

The action escalates into a chase through forests, rapids, caves, and steep terrain. The trailer shows Theron running through wooded areas and rafting through fast water as Egerton follows her into caves and down the side of a cliff. One sequence gives Sasha a head start measured by the duration of a song while her pursuer loads a crossbow, pushing the film’s premise toward a structured, almost game-like hunt.

Egerton plays Ben, described as a ruthless predator and a deadly assassin in what is presented as a rare turn as a villain for the actor. In the trailer, Egerton uses an Australian accent while he hunts Theron. Photos from the film show Egerton with a shaved head.

How “Apex” was made: locations, training, and the physical demands

“Apex” was shot on location in New South Wales, including the Blue Mountains west of Sydney. The chase is set in the fictional Wandarra National Park, which is based in New South Wales, with most filming taking place in the Blue Mountains.

Both leads underwent training described as grueling, spanning extreme sports practice and fight choreography. Theron has described the workload as a direct requirement of how the film was staged. She said she had never climbed, except for trees when she was a kid in Africa, and that after arriving in Australia she kayaked frequently as a workout while building strength for climbing the mountains shown in the movie.

Theron also said she climbs the actual mountains in the film and does so barefoot. The trailer’s emphasis on cliffs, caves, and fast-moving water aligns with those comments, presenting the wilderness not as a backdrop but as an active pressure point that shapes every decision Sasha makes.

Who is behind “Apex, ” and when it releases on Netflix

The film is directed by Baltasar Kormákur and written by Jeremy Robbins. “Apex” is produced by Peter Chernin, Jenno Topping, and David Ready for Chernin Entertainment; Ian Bryce for Ian Bryce Productions; and Kormákur for RVK Studios, along with Theron, A. J. Dix, and Beth Kono under Theron’s Secret Menu banner. Ray Angelic, Will McCance, and Dawn Olmstead serve as executive producers.

Eric Bana also stars. Netflix said “Apex” will debut globally on April 24 (ET) and be available to stream that day.

The trailer’s central contradiction is plain: a journey framed as escape becomes a calibrated pursuit in which every piece of missing equipment, every direction given, and every head start granted can turn into leverage for the hunter. For Charlize Theron, “Apex” positions survival not as a theme, but as the only remaining option.
