‘Tomb Raider’ Filming Halted Due to Sophie Turner’s On-Set Injury

Production of the highly anticipated series “Tomb Raider” has been temporarily halted due to a recent injury sustained by lead actress Sophie Turner. Variety has confirmed that Turner, known for her role in “Game of Thrones,” is cast as the iconic Lara Croft in the Prime Video adaptation. Phoebe Waller-Bridge, celebrated for her work on “Fleabag,” is both writing and executive producing the series.

The pause in filming comes after Turner aggravated a prior back injury. Reports indicate that production will be on hold for a minimum of one month, with the possibility extending to six months. A representative for Prime Video stated, “Sophie Turner recently experienced a minor injury. As a precaution, production has briefly paused to allow her time to recover. We look forward to resuming production as soon as possible.”

Production Timeline and Release Date

Filming commenced in January and has now been interrupted. The series is set to premiere in 2027, although the timeline may shift depending on Turner’s recovery.

Franchise Background

The “Tomb Raider” franchise began with the release of the original video game in 1996 and has enjoyed numerous revivals since. Upcoming titles “Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis” and “Tomb Raider: Catalyst” are expected to be released in 2026 and 2027, respectively.

Tomb Raider has been adapted for the big screen previously, with Angelina Jolie portraying Lara Croft in the 2001 film and Alicia Vikander taking on the role in the 2018 reboot, which received mixed reviews. The latest adaptation by Prime Video comes after their success with the “Fallout” series, further raising expectations.

Ownership of the Franchise

The rights to the “Tomb Raider” intellectual property are held by Embracer Group, a Swedish company that acquired Crystal Dynamics, the franchise’s long-time developer, in 2022. This acquisition occurred alongside their purchase of Middle-Earth Enterprises, the owner of the “Lord of the Rings” franchise.
