Andy Samberg’s ‘42.6 Years’ Switches Studios — and the Real Story Is What Changed Along the Way
andy samberg is at the center of a significant shake-up for ‘42. 6 Years, ’ a romantic comedy with genre elements first announced in 2023: the project has moved from Amazon MGM Studios to Focus Features for distribution, while key creative roles in front of and behind the camera have also changed.
What changed around Andy Samberg’s ‘42. 6 Years’—and what stayed the same
‘42. 6 Years’ is now set up at Focus Features after shifting from Amazon MGM Studios. Financial terms of the acquisition were not disclosed. Universal Pictures International will handle international distribution.
The film remains built around the same core premise: Ben (Samberg) undergoes an experimental procedure that leaves him cryogenically frozen for 42. 6 years. When he returns, he sets out to reconnect with his ex-girlfriend Ruthie. The story’s built-in contradiction is central to the emotional engine—Ben has not aged a day, while Ruthie has lived an entire lifetime without him.
On the creative side, the screenplay is written by Seth Reiss, based on a story by Reiss and Samberg. Ali Bell and Samberg are producing on behalf of Party Over Here.
Annette Bening replaces Jean Smart as the romantic counterpart
One of the biggest changes is the lead pairing. Andy Samberg was initially set to star opposite Jean Smart, but Annette Bening is now attached as the romantic counterpart, playing Ruthie.
Bening is a five-time Oscar nominee and earned her fifth Oscar nomination for her role in ‘Nyad, ’ where she starred opposite Jodie Foster and portrayed elite long-distance swimmer Diana Nyad. Her more recent credits include the miniseries ‘Apple Never Fall’ and Maggie Gyllenhaal’s ‘The Bride!’ She is also set to appear in the ‘Yellowstone’ spinoff ‘Dutton Ranch, ’ premiering May 15 (ET) on Paramount+, and later will be seen in ‘Lucky, ’ an Apple TV crime thriller based on the novel by Marissa Stapley, co-starring Anya Taylor-Joy.
Bening is represented by CAA and Gochman Law Group.
A new director takes over as distribution shifts to Focus Features
The directorial role has also changed hands. Michael Schwartz is newly attached to direct (alongside Tyler Nilson on prior work) and is taking over from Craig Gillespie.
Schwartz previously broke out with ‘The Peanut Butter Falcon, ’ the 2019 coming-of-age story centered on a young man with Down syndrome who dreams of becoming a wrestler. The film starred Zack Gottsagen, Dakota Johnson, and Shia LaBeouf, won the Narrative Spotlight Audience Award at SXSW, and helped earn Schwartz and Nilson a DGA Award nomination for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in First-Time Feature Film.
Schwartz and Nilson later co-directed ‘Los Frikis, ’ a drama based on true events about punk rockers in ’90s Cuba who deliberately infect themselves with HIV while seeking a utopian refuge from society.
Schwartz is represented by WME, Range Media Partners, and Johnson Shapiro Slewett & Kole.
Why the ‘42. 6 Years’ move matters for the release pipeline
The distribution shift places ‘42. 6 Years’ under Focus Features, which has multiple releases on its slate. The specialty label is in theaters with ‘The AI Doc: Or How I Became an Apocaloptimist. ’ Next is ‘Lorne’ on April 17 (ET). The label’s upcoming calendar also includes ‘Obsession’ (May 15), ‘Girls Like Girls’ (June 19), ‘Finding Emily’ (August 28), a new ‘Sense and Sensibility’ (October 16), and Robert Eggers’ ‘Werwulf’ (December 25), among other projects in international markets.
For the ‘42. 6 Years’ team, the immediate public takeaways are structural: new distributor, a new co-lead, and a new director—while the core story and creative authorship remain anchored by the Reiss-and-Samberg story foundation and the Reiss script.
Samberg is represented by UTA and Johnson, Shapiro, Slewett & Kole. Reiss is represented by UTA, Framework Collective, and Hansen.
With these changes now in place, the project’s next steps will unfold under Focus Features’ distribution banner—marking a clear new phase for andy samberg and ‘42. 6 Years’ after its 2023 announcement.
