Humber Bridge traffic and lorry fire

The lorry fire occurred on the slip road feeding the northbound A15 close to Barton-upon-Humber and produced heavy smoke that affected visibility and traffic flow. Traffic queues formed near the Barton interchange and were affecting movement on both sides of the road, with the situation extending onto humber bridge northbound lanes. A spokesperson for the Humber Bridge said, “Due to ongoing incidents in local area, there is heavy traffic on the bridge Northbound. ” Local junction congestion and smoke from the burning lorry compounded delays for drivers using the humber bridge corridor.

Police pursuit and arrests

Officers from Humberside Police engaged after spotting a suspected stolen vehicle on the Humber Bridge and initiated a short pursuit that concluded on the A15. When the vehicle stopped, occupants ran from the scene and were later located in a nearby field with the assistance of the Dog Section and Roads Policing unit. The Kinetic Roads Crime team played a role in spotting the car on Friday, March 27 (ET).

Humberside Police arrested two 17-year-old boys. One 17-year-old was held on suspicion of two counts of theft of a motor vehicle, burglary, failing to stop and dangerous driving. A second 17-year-old was arrested on suspicion of burglary, dangerous driving, failing to stop, driving without a licence and driving without insurance. Both have been released on conditional bail while enquiries continue. The pursuit and subsequent arrests also contributed to delays for motorists in the humber bridge area as police units and specialist teams worked at the scene.

What happens next

Humberside Police continue enquiries into the stolen-vehicle investigation and the circumstances of the arrests; the two teenagers remain on conditional bail while inquiries progress. Road clearance and investigations into the lorry fire will determine how quickly congestion eases, but drivers should expect ongoing disruption around the A15 and humber bridge approaches until emergency and policing activity finishes. Officials will update on any changes to traffic conditions and the status of the investigations as they become available.
