Maine Boasts Two Finalists for James Beard Awards

Maine has two finalists for the prestigious 2026 James Beard Awards, highlighting the state’s vibrant culinary scene. The nominees represent the finest in the industry, showcasing the exceptional talents of local chefs and restaurateurs.

Maine’s Finalists for the James Beard Awards

Dana Street, the founder of notable Portland establishments such as Fore Street, Scales, Standard Baking Co., and Street and Co., has been nominated for the Outstanding Restaurateur award. Street is one of five finalists nationwide in this category.

Also in contention is Thomas Takashi Cooke of Izakaya Minato, who is a finalist for the Best Chef: Northeast award. Cooke expressed his admiration for all restaurant owners, emphasizing the dedication of his team at Izakaya Minato.

Cooke’s Commitment to His Craft

During a typical service at Izakaya Minato, Cooke explained the hard work involved in running a restaurant. He noted that his success is largely due to a committed team. “Everybody works their butt off here,” he stated, expressing a desire for more recognition for all involved in the restaurant industry.

Past and Present James Beard Awards

Last year marked a notable absence for Maine, as there were no semifinalists advancing to the final round for the first time in over a decade. However, the state had two winners in 2024: Atsuko Fujimoto of Norimoto Bakery received an award for Outstanding Pastry Chef or Baker, and ZUbakery was recognized for Outstanding Bakery. Both are located in Portland.

Other Semifinalists from Maine

In addition to Street and Cooke, other notable semifinalists from Maine this year included:

  • Jeremy Broucek of Bread & Friends, Portland
  • Chris Gould of Central Provisions, Portland
  • Sara Jenkins of Nina June, Rockport
  • Jake Stevens of Leeward, Portland

A Glimpse into the James Beard Ceremony

The awards ceremony, where the winners will be announced, is scheduled for June 15, 2026, in Chicago. However, Cooke will not attend due to a prior commitment to take his son to a soccer match. The match, part of the World Cup, features Japan, which has particular significance for Cooke as he is half-Japanese.

Cooke remarked on the importance of the World Cup, noting, “I mean, the Beard nomination is a great honor, but the World Cup happens once every four years.” For him, it’s a memorable experience that takes precedence.
