Blue Jays Return Rule 5 Draft Pick Angel Bastardo to Red Sox

The Toronto Blue Jays have officially returned Angel Bastardo to the Boston Red Sox, as confirmed by announcements from both teams. This decision follows the Blue Jays designating the 24-year-old Bastardo for assignment last week during their Opening Day roster adjustments.

Background on Angel Bastardo

Angel Bastardo, who turns 24 in June, is an international signing by the Red Sox from Venezuela in 2018. He reached Double-A in 2023 but faced a setback when he required Tommy John surgery in 2024. Consequently, the Red Sox excluded him from their 40-man roster in the fall of 2024, leaving him eligible for the Rule 5 draft.

Rule 5 Draft and the Blue Jays’ Decision

In the Rule 5 draft, the Blue Jays selected Bastardo with hopes of integrating him into their roster. However, due to the rules surrounding Rule 5 picks, the Jays had to keep him on the active roster for at least 90 days. This aim to groom him for potential inclusion in the 2026 season was challenged by his recovery from surgery.

Spring Training Challenges

While recovering, Bastardo participated in spring training but struggled significantly. He faced 33 batters and walked seven, equating to a 21.2% walk rate. This was nearly three times higher than the league average, coupled with four wild pitches during his appearances. These issues led the Blue Jays to designate him for assignment as they determined he could not contribute effectively.

The Future for Angel Bastardo

  • After the Blue Jays returned him, Bastardo is expected to rejoin the Red Sox organization.
  • The Red Sox have no obligation to immediately place him on their 40-man roster.
  • Bastardo may return to Double-A or potentially rise to Triple-A soon.

Although his organization switch was unusual considering he was healing, it allowed him to earn a year of big league pay and service time while on the injured list in 2025. The next steps for Bastardo will be crucial as he aims to continue his career in professional baseball.
