Virginia and Amaka Agugua-Hamilton Separate After Breaking 8-Year NCAA Drought

Virginia’s women’s basketball program is undergoing a significant change. Amaka Agugua-Hamilton has been separated from her role as head coach after a promising season.

Separation After Success

The announcement came on April 4, 2026, following an impressive run by the team. Agugua-Hamilton concluded her four-year tenure with the Cavaliers, posting an overall record of 70 wins and 58 losses. In ACC play, her record stood at 29 wins and 42 losses.

A Remarkable Season

In her final season, Agugua-Hamilton led Virginia to its most successful performance since 2011-12. The team’s notable achievements included:

  • A record of 22 wins and 12 losses.
  • Progressing to the Sweet 16 in the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2000.
  • Claiming victory over No. 2 Iowa in a double-overtime thriller.

This Sweet 16 appearance marked a significant milestone for the Cavaliers, as Dawn Staley, a Virginia alum and current head coach of South Carolina, acknowledged the program’s return to prominence.

Immediate Changes Ahead

Virginia athletics confirmed Agugua-Hamilton will not be returning. The athletic department is initiating a national search for her successor. Staley, while commenting on the situation, stated that she had been in contact with Virginia’s athletic director, Carla Williams, but the reasons for the coaching change remain unclear.

Prior to her tenure at Virginia, Agugua-Hamilton successfully coached at Missouri State. There, she led the program to consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances, including a Sweet 16 run in 2021.

The separation signifies a pivotal moment for Virginia’s women’s basketball program as it seeks to build on recent successes and establish a new direction moving forward.
