Disney+ Pushes Maul: Shadow Lord With A Darker Animation Upgrade
Disney+ is getting a sharper, darker Star Wars look as Maul: Shadow Lord prepares to debut its first two episodes on Monday, April 6 in Eastern Time. Lucasfilm president Dave Filoni has confirmed that a second season is already in the works, signaling that this story is built to continue beyond its opening chapter. The series centers on Darth Maul’s return, with the character moving deeper into the galaxy’s criminal underworld while the production leans into an upgraded animation approach.
A new look for Disney+
The biggest change around Disney+ is visual. Executive producer Athena Yvette Portillo said Dave Filoni wanted the animation to feel more upgraded before he moved on to shoot Ahsoka season 2, including changes to body mechanics, more fluid walk cycles and fight scenes, and more expressive facial movement.
Portillo also said the team pushed for a painterly quality, using oil on canvas map paintings, brush strokes on glass panes, and practical models to create what she called an “old school with new school” approach. The goal was to make the series feel more cinematic while still remaining fully digital.
Why Maul remains the focus
The story is built around Maul’s return and his continued place in the Star Wars canon after Order 66 and The Clone Wars. The series is described as a prequel to his appearances in Solo: A Star Wars Story and Star Wars Rebels, with Maul trying to rebuild power in the criminal underworld.
Filoni says Maul works because he is not defined by redemption, but by fear and the need for power. In his telling, that fear of being insignificant drives the character, making him an enduring figure in the franchise’s mythology. The series also places him in conflict with Jedi Padawan Devon Izara, who is tempted to join him in fighting a common enemy.
What the first reactions are saying
Early reactions have singled out the animation as one of the strongest elements of the series. Viewers have described it as a major step forward for the franchise’s animated television work, with a grittier tone that fits the noir crime thriller direction.
The new style also stands apart from The Clone Wars while still carrying echoes of it, which matters because that earlier series helped bring Maul back after his apparent death in The Phantom Menace. In that sense, Disney+ is not just hosting a new Star Wars story; it is showing a visual upgrade that is meant to match the character’s darker arc.
What happens next
The immediate focus is on the Monday premiere of the first two episodes, but the larger message is already clear: this story is meant to keep going. With a second season already in development, Maul: Shadow Lord is being positioned as a continuing chapter in Maul’s rise, fall, and return. For Disney+, that means the launch is only the start of a longer run built around one of Star Wars’ most persistent villains.
