Arrest of fugitive mafia boss shakes Amalfi Coast after villa raid
The arrest of Roberto Mazzarella at a luxury villa on the Amalfi Coast has brought one of Italy’s most wanted fugitives back into custody after more than a year on the run. Italian police said the 48-year-old was detained in Vietri sul Mare on the evening of the operation, while he was with his wife and two children. The Carabinieri said he did not resist when officers moved in.
Police operation focused on coastal villa
The Carabinieri said Mazzarella had escaped last January when he was supposed to have been arrested on murder charges. They identified him as a powerful figure within the Camorra organised crime group in Naples and said he was listed as one of Italy’s most dangerous fugitives.
Officers entered the villa in heavily armed formation, and patrol boats were positioned off the coast during the operation. Police also found three luxury watches, about €20, 000, false documents, and mobile phones at the property. Police said the property was being used under a false name.
The arrest took place in a setting that sharply contrasted with the charges hanging over Mazzarella. The luxury villa location, the family presence, and the lack of resistance all underlined how quickly the operation was executed once officers closed in.
