Sky Ferreira has recently raised concerns over potential similarities between her past work and Charli XCX’s album, ‘Wuthering Heights’. Ferreira indicated that some elements of the soundtrack may have been derived from her older songs.

Ferreira’s Claims on Song Ownership

The ‘Brat’ singer collaborated with John Cale of The Velvet Underground for the official soundtrack of Emerald Fennell’s recent film, released in February. Ferreira made a guest appearance on the track ‘Eyes Of The World’. However, in a series of Instagram messages, she suggested that certain songs from the soundtrack mirrored her earlier music.

Industry Insider Speculations

After a social media user quoted an “industry insider,” claims emerged that the introduction of ‘Chains Of Love’ reportedly drew inspiration from Ferreira’s demo, ‘Ancient Idols’, which dates back to around 2018. This demo was originally intended for her unreleased second album, ‘Masochism’. The user further asserted that ‘Altars’, another track on ‘Wuthering Heights’, was linked to a 2015 Ferreira demo.

In her response, Ferreira disputed the insider’s claims, stating, “Your industry ‘insider’ is wrong. Close but wrong.” She emphasized that there was more than just an intro taken from her work, asserting, “I have proof of everything with dates.” Ferreira expressed hesitation in pursuing the matter further, acknowledging her understanding of the industry.

Background on Their Collaboration

The relationship between Ferreira and XCX extends back several years. They collaborated on the single ‘Cross You Out’ in 2019, where XCX praised Ferreira for her talent and distinct taste. In summer 2024, XCX professed her admiration for Rihanna, sharing that Ferreira was her only exception among pop stars.

Later that year, when XCX learned that Ferreira had recorded a song titled ‘Leash’ for the A24 film ‘Babygirl’, she expressed her excitement on social media.

Ownership of Music

In light of recent developments, Ferreira has been focused on regaining ownership of her music after her recent departure from Capitol Records. In November 2023, reports emerged confirming her removal from the Capitol roster on its official website.
