Orioles Recall Brandon Young as Dietrich Enns Suffers Foot Infection

The Baltimore Orioles have announced that left-handed pitcher Dietrich Enns has been placed on the injured list due to an infected left foot. This infection required treatment with IV antibiotics at a hospital in Pittsburgh, according to manager Craig Albernaz.

Brandon Young Recalled to the Orioles

To fill the void left by Enns, the Orioles recalled right-handed pitcher Brandon Young. Young is set to start in the game against the Chicago White Sox tonight. This move comes as the team needed additional pitching depth after Zach Eflin was placed on the injured list due to an elbow injury.

Recent Developments in the Pitching Rotation

Cade Povich was also recently recalled and is another candidate to secure a spot in the rotation. He pitched 5 2/3 innings in relief of Chris Bassitt yesterday, showcasing his capability as a reliable option.

Dietrich Enns’ Performance

Enns has a 5.60 ERA from seven appearances with the Tigers last season.
He was traded to the Orioles for cash during the trade deadline.
In his final two months with the team, he posted a 3.14 ERA over 28 2/3 innings.
Enns recorded a strikeout rate of 27.6% and earned two saves during that period.

Contract Details

The Orioles had a $3 million club option on Enns for the 2026 season but opted to negotiate a new one-year deal worth $2.5 million instead. This agreement includes a $3.5 million club option for 2027, along with a $125,000 buyout.

Brandon Young’s Previous Performance

Brandon Young made his Major League debut in 2025. He experienced challenges with an ERA above 6.00 over a dozen starts. However, advanced metrics like xFIP (4.52) and SIERA (4.67) indicated he might have performed better than his results suggested.

The Future for the Orioles’ Rotation

With Eflin’s potential extended absence, Young, Povich, and Albert Suarez are expected to compete for the No. 5 spot in the rotation. Eflin is currently seeking a second opinion from orthopedic surgeon Keith Meister regarding his elbow injury.
