Steve Newmark, Executive Associate Athletic Director, emphasized that Malone was the first candidate considered for the position due to his reputation as an innovative coach and mentor. The decision to hire Malone was made by a search committee, which included prominent figures such as Malcolm Turner, Antawn Jamison, and Bubba Cunningham, along with assistance from Chad Chatlos of Turnkey ZRG Partners.
