Lebanon News: Israeli strikes hit Beirut, south, and Bekaa after ceasefire row
Lebanon News is dominated by a fresh wave of Israeli airstrikes that hit central Beirut, southern Lebanon, and the eastern Bekaa Valley on Wednesday afternoon ET. The strikes came hours after a ceasefire was announced in the U. S. -Israeli war with Iran, and after Israel said that agreement does not extend to its fighting with Hezbollah in Lebanon. Beirut hit without warning

Lebanon’s National News Agency said the airstrikes hit at least five neighborhoods in Beirut’s central and coastal areas, while the attacks also reached southern Lebanon and the eastern Bekaa Valley, areas where Hezbollah holds sway.
Israel’s military said it had targeted missile launchers, command centers, intelligence infrastructure, and what it described as Hezbollah command centers and military sites. The military also accused Hezbollah of using civilians as human shields. In its statement, the military said, “The State of Lebanon and its civilians must refuse Hezbollah’s entrenchment in civilian areas and its weapons build-up capabilities. ”
Immediate reactions from Lebanese officials
Lebanon’s Minister of Social Affairs, Haneed Sayed, called the strikes a “very dangerous turning point. ” She said, “These hits are now at the heart of Beirut … Half of the sheltered (internally displaced persons) are in Beirut in this area, ” adding that she had just driven by the areas hit. She also said Lebanon’s government is ready to enter negotiations with Israel for an end to hostilities, an offer the president previously made.
Israel has not responded to that offer. The gap between the two sides remains wide, and the latest attacks show how quickly the conflict can intensify even after major diplomatic developments elsewhere in the region. In the broader fighting, Israel has already framed its campaign as aimed at weakening Hezbollah’s military infrastructure, while Lebanon faces mounting strain from displacement and repeated strikes.
