Charlie’s Angels Stars Recall Bikini Battles, Cast Changes and Health Scares at 50th Anniversary Panel
Charlie’ s Angels took center stage Monday at the Paley Center’ s PaleyFest L. A. panel in Hollywood, where Cheryl Ladd, Jaclyn Smith and Kate Jackson gathered to mark the series’ 50th anniversary. The conversation moved from the show’ s early creative battles to the very real health struggles all three women have faced.
Ladd drew one of the loudest reactions when she recalled being called a “troublemaker” by producer Aaron Spelling over how often she was made to wear a bikini on the hit 1970s series. She said she sent the production a message by buying “the tiniest little bikini ever seen on television, ” a move that did not go over well behind the scenes but changed how she was dressed on screen.
“We filmed, and Aaron was not happy, ” Ladd said. “So he said to someone, ‘tell the little troublemaker that she’s never going to do that again!’ And I didn’t, but I did make my point. And after that, I was wearing swimsuits I felt comfortable in. ” Smith answered with a laugh: “And our ratings went up!”
Charlie’ s Angels and the women who built it
Ladd, Smith and Jackson shared stories about the show’s origins, favorite moments and the way Charlie’ s Angels changed the television landscape. Smith said the series felt different from the start because it showed “three women chasing danger instead of being rescued from danger, ” adding that it “gave women permission to be independent and break out of the mold and not be defined by men. ”
Jackson also described how the project came together after she was working on “The Rookies” and had a right of first refusal on her next project. She said Leonard Goldberg brought her a project called “Alley Cats, ” and the panel traced how that early idea eventually evolved into Charlie’ s Angels. The audience also saw a highlight reel featuring episodes including “Angels in Chains, ” “Angel Flight” and “Angel Come Home, ” with the latter marking Farrah Fawcett’s guest return.
Charlie’ s Angels stars open up about cancer battles
The panel took a serious turn when Ladd revealed publicly for the first time that she had been recovering from breast cancer. She said the diagnosis was aggressive and described the experience as “a humbling experience, ” while adding that she had strong medical and family support through treatment.
Smith said she leaned on “the power of girlfriends” and family during her own breast cancer treatment. She told Ladd that when Cheryl called, “the first thing I did was send her my wigs. ” Smith also said she had been at Jackson’s bedside during her breast cancer treatment. Jackson used the moment to stress the importance of early detection, telling the audience, “It’s really important to understand and embrace not being afraid of getting a mammogram. Early detection is key. Find it early enough and you’ll probably be all right. ” Ladd added: “If you find something, don’t ignore it. ”
What comes next for the anniversary conversation
The 50th anniversary panel gave Charlie’ s Angels a renewed spotlight, with the women revisiting the show’s production history while speaking candidly about health and resilience. The conversation underscored how the series still resonates, both as a television milestone and as a platform for the kind of honesty that can reach audiences far beyond the stage. As the anniversary continues to draw attention, Charlie’ s Angels remains a story about women making television history and speaking plainly about what they have lived through.
