Kaiser Chiefs battle injury crisis as momentum builds before TS Galaxy clash
kaiser chiefs are trying to keep their rise on track after co-coach Khalil Ben Youssef said the club’s injury crisis has gone largely unnoticed this season. The warning comes after Chiefs came from behind to beat Orbit College 3-1 on Monday at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium, a result that stretched their league winning run to three games. The victory lifted kaiser chiefs into a CAF Confederation Cup position on the Betway Premiership table, but the coach said the team has had to fight through constant disruption.
Injury pressure has shaped the season
Youssef said the situation has affected performances and consistency throughout the campaign, with the squad repeatedly forced into changes. He pointed to extended absences for Khanyisa Mayo, Sibongiseni Mthethwa, Etiosa Ighodaro and captain Brandon Peterson, saying the club has been dealing with setbacks at almost every stage.
“Eighty-percent of the injuries we’ve had this season have been caused by contact in the game so we have been unlucky, every game we lose one or two players, ” Youssef said after the win.
He also highlighted the demands of competing on several fronts, saying the club is carrying a heavier workload than in previous seasons. For him, the issue is not just the injury list itself, but the way it has broken rhythm and made selection a weekly challenge.
Kaizer Chiefs keep pushing for the best finish
Even with those problems, kaizer chiefs have found a strong response in recent weeks. The comeback against Orbit College showed resilience, with the side recovering from a first-half deficit and building on a growing sense of stability. Youssef said younger players and returning squad members have helped the team settle at a crucial point in the season.
He also gave an update on Petersen, saying: “Petersen, he was with the physio. We have to say thank you to the medical staff for preparing him. And last weeks he was with the coaches, he’s working and I think soon he’ll be back with the team. ”
That recovery matters because the next stretch could shape the club’s finish. Chiefs are now within reach of a top-three place, and Youssef said the team is not limiting its ambition. “First position, second position, we are fighting for the best position that we can do, ” he said, while adding that finishing in the top three is the minimum target for the season.
What comes next for the squad
The latest result has given kaiser chiefs momentum, but the medical situation remains central to their next steps. The coach said the club has often been forced into changes because of injury and suspension, even as the squad has shown enough depth to keep winning.
Chiefs will now turn to Sunday’s home meeting with TS Galaxy, when they will look to extend their unbeaten run and keep their continental push alive. If the recent recovery continues, kaiser chiefs could enter the decisive phase of the season with both form and belief on their side.
