Sony’s Tom Rothman Urges Theaters to Extend Windows, Eliminate Ads

Tom Rothman, chairman and CEO of Sony Pictures Motion Picture Group, emphasized the need for theaters to adapt to improve the industry at CinemaCon. Speaking at the Colosseum in Caesars Palace, Las Vegas, Rothman shared three critical changes he believes cinema exhibitors must implement.

Rothman’s Key Recommendations for Theaters

While acknowledging improvements in the cinema landscape, Rothman pointed out that admissions are still down from pre-Covid levels. He stressed the urgency for urgent action from both studios and exhibitors.

Extend Theatrical Windows

  • Rothman urged cinemas to enforce longer theatrical windows, even if it means they cannot screen every film.

Reduce Advertising

  • He called for theaters to eliminate excessive advertisements and significantly shorten prolonged preshow content.

Enhance Affordability

  • Affordability is a significant concern. Rothman stated that making movie-going accessible again is essential.

Rothman admitted that this journey is challenging but expressed support for exhibitors, stating that they have been wonderful partners. His comments received a positive reaction, with the audience responding with applause.

Industry Context

The theatrical landscape has seen positive shifts recently, including Universal’s commitment to a 45-day exclusive theatrical window for major releases. Rothman described this as a promising development. Despite improved box office figures, he reiterated that overall attendance remains lower than desired.

Sony’s Upcoming Film Slate

During the hour-and-a-half presentation, Rothman was supported by key Sony executives, including:

  • Sanford Panitch, President of Sony Pictures Motion Picture Group
  • Nicole Brown, President of TriStar Pictures
  • Kristine Belson, President of Sony Pictures Animation
  • Adam Bergerman, President of Domestic Distribution at Sony Pictures Motion Picture Group

The team unveiled exciting upcoming films, which include new titles from franchises like Jumanji and Spider-Man, as well as adaptations of literary works and video games. Sony also announced a planned R-rated animated feature based on Bloodborne from PlayStation Productions, along with a release date for Takashi Yamazaki’s Grandgear, set for President’s Day in 2028.
