Devils Appoint Sunny Mehta as New General Manager – Pro Hockey Rumors
The New Jersey Devils have announced the appointment of Sunny Mehta as their new general manager. Mehta is the sixth individual to hold this position in the franchise’s history, taking over from Tom Fitzgerald.
Sunny Mehta’s Background and Journey
At 48 years old, Mehta brings a wealth of experience to the role. He previously served as the Assistant General Manager and Director of Analytics for the Florida Panthers since 2023. His leadership contributed significantly to the Panthers’ remarkable achievement of back-to-back Stanley Cup appearances.
Mehta returns to Newark, New Jersey, where he began his NHL career as Director of Hockey Analytics from 2014 to 2018. Raised in Wyckoff, New Jersey, he was an avid Devils fan and a varsity hockey player at Ramapo High School.
A Unique Profile
Mehta’s path to NHL leadership is unconventional. After high school, he attended the University of Miami’s Frost School of Music, earning a degree in Jazz Guitar in 2000. He also pursued a successful career as a professional musician and poker player, co-authoring books on strategic poker. Mehta later obtained a Master’s in Data Science from the City University of New York, showcasing his analytical prowess.
Impact at Florida and Return to New Jersey
While with the Panthers, he collaborated closely with General Manager Bill Zito. Mehta’s strategic contributions helped assemble a well-structured team, allowing the Panthers to thrive in the competitive landscape of the NHL. His analytical insights played a key role in drafting talents, such as Jesper Bratt, who has become a top scorer for the Devils.
Roster Challenges Ahead
In his new position, Mehta inherits a largely intact roster, which has its strengths and weaknesses. Limited changes are expected among forwards, as both Evgenii Dadonov and Zack MacEwen are pending unrestricted free agents, while only Dennis Cholowski is under contract pressure on the defensive end. In goal, Jacob Markström and Jake Allen are secured for the long term.
Mehta’s first task will involve navigating challenges from last season, including injuries that hampered the team, notably Jack Hughes’ freak hand injury. Despite potential obstacles, the Devils have a formidable core with young stars like Hughes and Nico Hischier.
Future Considerations
The new general manager must analyze Fitzgerald’s past strategies, which, although intended to bolster the young core, fell short. Mehta may also consider trading high-profile players like Dougie Hamilton or Timo Meier, both of whom hold significant contracts.
Additionally, changes may be on the horizon for the coaching staff, as head coach Sheldon Keefe’s future remains uncertain. Still, Keefe’s modern approach aligns with Mehta’s analytical perspective.
Looking Ahead
With the season concluding, Mehta will soon set his focus on the upcoming draft, scheduled for May 5. The Devils are projected to hold the 11th overall pick, a crucial opportunity to further strengthen their roster for the future.
