Nebraska Unveils $600 Million Memorial Stadium Renovation Plan

Nebraska’s iconic Memorial Stadium is set for an extensive renovation plan, amounting to an estimated $600 million. This project, known as the “Big Red Rebuild,” aims to enhance the fan experience and significantly boost revenues for the University of Nebraska’s athletic department.

Overview of the Renovation Plan

The proposed renovation plan will be funded through a combination of $250 million in philanthropic contributions and $350 million from private bond financing. The University Board of Regents is expected to review and potentially approve the proposal in their upcoming meeting in Lincoln.

Timeline and Capacity Enhancements

Construction is slated to commence after the 2026 football season, with a targeted completion date for the start of the 2028 season. Upon completion, the stadium’s capacity will be approximately 80,000 seats, featuring 20,000 new chairback seats for enhanced comfort.

Improving Fan Experience

  • Implementation of a 360-degree main concourse connecting the east and west sides.
  • Upgraded amenities throughout the stadium.
  • Increased annual revenue projection by 40%, reaching up to $95 million.
  • Hosting of concerts and other events year-round.

Athletic Director Troy Dannen emphasized the importance of the renovation in maintaining the stadium’s iconic status in college sports. The enhancements are designed to provide a top-tier fan experience while ensuring the athletic program has the resources needed to compete at elite levels.

A Legacy of Excellence

Memorial Stadium, home to the Cornhuskers since 1923, has successfully maintained a remarkable sellout streak of 410 games, the longest in NCAA history, dating back to 1962. In recent years, there have been incremental upgrades, including luxury suites added in 1999 and seating expansion in 2013.

Previous renovation efforts, including a proposed $450 million update approved in 2023, were re-evaluated to better address scope and costs. The Big Red Rebuild project represents a significant commitment to not only preserving but also enhancing the legacy of Memorial Stadium.
