Flightline Colt Breaks OBS Record with $10.5M Sale
The Flightline colt, known as Hip 1056, captivated the audience at the Ocala Breeders’ Sales Spring 2-Year-Olds in Training Sale. This event took place on April 17, 2024, showcasing a highly anticipated collection of racehorses. The bidding for Hip 1056 began at an impressive $1 million, igniting an intense competition in the sale ring.
Record-Breaking Sale
In an exhilarating turn of events, Donato Lanni, representing Zedan Racing Stable, secured Hip 1056 for an astonishing $10.5 million. This sale set a new record for juvenile horses at OBS, outpacing the previous record held by Grade 1 winner Brant, who was purchased for $3 million in the earlier 2023 sale.
Hip 1056 is now the second-highest-priced 2-year-old sold in North America’s history. Bred in Kentucky by Edward and Beverly Seltzer along with W.S. Farish, this colt is a product of the first crop of 2022 Horse of the Year, Flightline. The colt’s lineage includes the graded-placed stakes winner mare Lucrezia, from the renowned sire Into Mischief.
Impressive Performance
During the under-tack show, Hip 1056 showcased his abilities by breezing a remarkable furlong in just :09 3/5 seconds. Lanni highlighted the impressive nature of his performance, stating, “When he worked, everybody got on that rail and watched. He delivered.”
A Unique Career Path
- Sale History: Purchased as a weanling for $575,000 at the 2024 Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale.
- Breeder: Edward Seltzer, Beverly Seltzer, and W.S. Farish.
- Consignor: Hartley/DeRenzo Thoroughbreds, agent.
Lanni also mentioned the expectations surrounding the price, admitting he did not foresee such a record-setting bid. The emotional connection to racing and his thrill for the sport made Amr Zedan a formidable participant in the sale.
Hartley/DeRenzo Thoroughbreds Achievements
Randy Hartley and Dean DeRenzo, owners of Hartley/DeRenzo Thoroughbreds, have now made history with the highest-priced colt and filly ever sold at an OBS 2-year-old sale. Earlier in the week, their filly by Jackie’s Warrior sold for $2.3 million.
Reflecting on the auction, Hartley expressed admiration for Hip 1056, stating, “When you’re around him for five seconds, you can just see that he breathes a different air than other horses.” They have been consigning 2-year-olds since 1992 and have produced numerous successful racehorses, including champion Shisospicy and multiple grade 1 winner Taiba.
Hartley acknowledged the challenges of maintaining such high standards in the industry, emphasizing the need to frequently evaluate and adjust their training program. He notably switched breeze riders for this sale, using a young rider named Adrian Martinez, who demonstrated exceptional skill and adaptability.
This impressive sale underscores the significance of Hip 1056 and the continued evolution of horse racing at events like the Ocala Breeders’ Sales.
