Mets President Supports Manager Carlos Mendoza Despite Losing Streak
Amid a challenging nine-game losing streak, David Stearns, the president of baseball operations for the New York Mets, publicly supports manager Carlos Mendoza. Stearns emphasized the need for the team to elevate their performance without making drastic changes.
Mets’ Struggles on Offense
Prior to a 12-4 defeat against the Chicago Cubs, Stearns praised Mendoza’s coaching abilities, stating, “I think Mendy’s doing a really good job.” The Mets’ offensive shortcomings are stark, as the team ranks 28th in the league for scoring, averaging a mere 3.4 runs per game.
Urgency and Mental Mistakes
Stearns addressed the urgency within the team, asserting, “There’s plenty of urgency. There’s plenty of want.” However, that urgency hasn’t translated into effective play, leading to mistakes on both offense and defense. Star player Juan Soto is currently sidelined due to a calf injury, further complicating matters for the Mets.
- Current Injuries:
- Juan Soto – calf injury
- Jorge Polanco – right wrist and leg issues
Defensively, shortstop Francisco Lindor has faced criticism for recent errors described by Stearns as “uncharacteristic.” Despite this downturn, Stearns remains hopeful, suggesting that such mistakes are unlikely to persist.
Changes in Lineup
In light of the ongoing struggles, Mendoza adjusted the batting order, notably moving Lindor from the leadoff position for the first time this season. Mendoza explained that the absence of several left-handed hitters necessitated this change.
Looking Ahead
Despite their current last-place standing in the NL East and trailing five games behind the division leader, both Mendoza and Stearns maintain a positive outlook. They believe that once the offense begins to improve, the team’s narrative will shift.
Stearns concluded, “We haven’t hit. When you don’t hit, you can look stagnant. I don’t think we’re stagnant; I think we’re playing hard.” The Mets remain eager for a turnaround as they prepare for an upcoming homestand, which could see Soto’s return to the lineup.
