Glenavon Fc relegated after Crusaders win in Mourneview Park showdown

glenavon fc were relegated from the Irish Premiership on Saturday night after Crusaders edged a 1-0 win in their basement battle at Mourneview Park. The result sealed Championship football next season for Glenavon Fc and lifted Crusaders into the promotion-relegation play-off. Fraser Bryden scored the decisive goal in the second half, while Coleraine’s 3-0 win over Linfield pushed them up to second in the table.

Late blow ends Glenavon Fc fightback

The turning point came six minutes into the second half, when Cameron Bruce crossed from the left and Bryden lashed home a left-footed volley. That goal proved enough to settle a tense contest that had carried major consequences for both clubs, with five points now separating the sides and one set of fixtures left to play.

Glenavon Fc had moments that briefly raised hopes of a breakthrough. Nathaniel Ferris headed a half-cleared free kick back into the Crusaders penalty area on 13 minutes, and Paddy Burns spun and fired through the grasp of Musa Dibaga, only for the referee’s assistant to flag for offside. Later, Peter Campbell played a one-two with Ferris and forced a strong block from Lewis Barr as Glenavon Fc pressed for an equaliser.

Crusaders hold firm as pressure builds

Crusaders also threatened before the goal. Elliot Dunlop cut the ball back for Adam Brooks on the counter-attack, but Jacob Carney pushed the shot behind. After Bryden’s strike, Glenavon Fc kept pushing, but Dibaga stayed alert, including a late free-kick save after Campbell curled a delivery over the wall.

In stoppage time, Crusaders were reduced to 10 men when Jordan Forsythe received a straight red card for a late challenge on Paul McGovern. Even so, the visitors had already done enough to secure the points and confirm their place in the play-off.

Coleraine move second as title race tightens

Elsewhere, Coleraine kept their own season alive with a 3-0 win over Linfield at Windsor Park, moving second in the table above Glentoran on goal difference and three points behind leaders Larne. That result means the race at the top remains open heading into the final round.

Cliftonville beat Dungannon Swifts 1-0 in the other top-half fixture, while Carrick Rangers defeated Bangor 3-0 and Portadown beat Ballymena United 2-1 in the bottom six. For Glenavon Fc, though, the immediate picture is far starker: after a 21-year run in the Premiership, the club now faces a season in the Championship. The final round will decide whether Crusaders can protect their top-flight place, but for Glenavon Fc the drop is already confirmed.
