A humanoid robot has set a new benchmark in the realm of sports by breaking the world half-marathon record in China. Developed by the smartphone manufacturer Honor, the robot completed the 13.1-mile race in an astonishing time of 50 minutes and 26 seconds. This achievement surpasses the human record of 57 minutes and 20 seconds, previously held by Ugandan Olympic medalist Jacob Kiplimo, by a notable seven minutes.

Record-Breaking Achievement in Beijing

This remarkable feat took place during the Beijing E-Town Robot Half Marathon, where over 100 humanoid robots from 76 institutions participated alongside 12,000 human runners. To ensure safety, the robots raced on separate courses from their human counterparts.

Technological Advancements

The winning robot, known as “Blitz,” incorporated advanced technology that draws inspiration from elite runners. Key features included:

  • Long legs measuring nearly a meter
  • Innovative balance systems
  • A liquid cooling mechanism to prevent overheating

Unlike many of its competitors, the Honor robot operated autonomously, using artificial intelligence algorithms to adjust its pace and maintain balance in real time.

Additional Highlights from the Marathon

Another robot, which was remotely controlled, achieved an even faster time of 48 minutes and 19 seconds, showcasing the potential of robotic technology. However, the event was not without challenges. Several robots encountered technical difficulties, with some falling down or veering off course.

This half-marathon is part of a broader initiative by China to showcase its advancements in robotics technology.
