Padres Secure Free-Agent Pitcher Lucas Giolito

The San Diego Padres have strengthened their starting rotation by signing pitcher Lucas Giolito to a one-year contract. This move comes as the team aims to bolster its pitching staff during the early part of the 2026 season.

Giolito’s Contract Details

Lucas Giolito, a 31-year-old right-hander, has joined the Padres as the last notable free-agent starting pitcher available. His contract includes:

  • A guaranteed salary of $3 million
  • Performance incentives that could raise his total earnings to over $7.1 million in 2026
  • A mutual option for the 2027 season, although such options are rarely exercised

Performance History

Giolito is set to join the Padres after building up at low-A Lake Elsinore. He has previously demonstrated solid performance, posting a 3.41 ERA in 2025 over 26 starts with the Boston Red Sox. Throughout his career, Giolito has accumulated a 4.30 ERA across 206 games, having played for several teams, including the Nationals, White Sox, Angels, Guardians, and Red Sox.

Recovery and Future Contributions

Giolito missed the entire 2024 season due to elbow surgery, which involved repairing a torn UCL. As he prepares to step into the Padres’ rotation, he is expected to contribute substantially by mid-May when he must be placed on the active roster.

Padres’ Current Situation

The Padres currently hold a 16-7 record, sharing the top position in the National League West with the Los Angeles Dodgers. However, recent injuries to key pitchers like Nick Pivetta and Joe Musgrove raise concerns about the stability of their rotation.

Injury Concerns

Pivetta and Musgrove are sidelined with elbow problems, potentially affecting their availability for several weeks. Griffin Canning, who the Padres signed in February, is on a rehabilitation assignment following Achilles surgery. He is expected to make his season debut soon after his rehab ends on May 3.

Next Steps for the Padres

In the meantime, Matt Waldron has stepped up to replace Pivetta in the rotation. However, he struggled in his last outing against the Angels, allowing six runs in 3⅔ innings. Waldron is scheduled to start again on Thursday against the Rockies.
