The situation changed when the Cleveland Browns selected Spencer Fano from Utah as the ninth pick, followed by the New York Giants, who opted for Francis Mauigoa from Miami at pick ten. The Miami Dolphins then selected Kadyn Proctor two picks later at pick twelve.
Amid these selections, Lions general manager Brad Holmes began exploring ways to trade up for Miller, who they ultimately chose at pick seventeen. “We did, yeah,” Holmes shared, confirming discussions with other teams about a potential trade. “But we definitely explored strongly about trading up.”
Trade Discussions and Strategy
While the exact teams and trade costs discussed remain unclear, it was evident the Lions wanted to secure Miller. Holmes acknowledged the importance of assessing the capital needed for such a move. Ultimately, the cost appeared too high, prompting the Lions to wait for Miller’s draft position to remain favorable.
The Los Angeles Rams surprised many by selecting quarterback Ty Simpson with the thirteenth pick. This decision positively influenced Holmes’s confidence regarding Miller’s availability. “Right after LA took the quarterback, I felt pretty good that we might be able to just get Blake,” he remarked.
Results of Patient Draft Strategy
The Lions’ patience allowed them to secure Miller without sacrificing their draft assets. By the end of the first round, they not only acquired their preferred tackle but also retained their second-round pick, which is the 50th overall. Furthermore, the team holds seven additional picks for Day 3 of the draft, providing them with continued flexibility.
