Cardinals Skip Edge Rusher in Draft; Calais Campbell Update & More Notes
In the recent NFL draft, the Arizona Cardinals chose Jeremiyah Love as their top pick, despite prior speculation about selecting an edge rusher. The team had shown interest in various candidates like David Bailey and Arvell Reese. However, the decision to forgo an edge rusher surprised some analysts, given the team’s performance last season, where they managed only 30 sacks.
Cardinals’ Strategy and Player Assessment
General Manager Monti Ossenfort explained that the drafting strategy did not align with the board’s layout. He mentioned the current roster includes players they value, such as Josh Sweat, whose Pro Bowl-level performance was anticipated. The team also retains Baron Browning and Zaven Collins, alongside Jordan Burch, drafted in the previous year’s third round. However, they acknowledge challenges faced by second-round pick BJ Ojulari, who struggled post-recovery from multiple knee injuries.
Future Roster Moves
The Cardinals plan to sign six to eight undrafted rookies, with names expected to be announced shortly. The rookie minicamp is scheduled for May 8-9, marking the first appearance of Love on the field.
Calais Campbell Status
Furthermore, Ossenfort revealed that the team is in discussions with veteran defensive end Calais Campbell, who remains a free agent. Although Campbell could continue his career into a possible 19th season, his future with the Cardinals remains uncertain.
Quarterback Considerations for 2027
With the acquisition of Carson Beck, questions surround the team’s quarterback future. Ossenfort emphasized that this pick does not exclude the possibility of drafting another quarterback in 2027. The franchise has historically invested heavily in this position, having used two top-10 picks in consecutive years. Beck may see playtime in 2026, but it is uncertain if he will debut this season, given the impending free agency of current quarterbacks Jacoby Brissett and Gardner Minshew II.
Training Camp Expectations
As the Cardinals prepare for the upcoming season, Ossenfort stated that critical decisions will take shape during training camp, particularly around August 31, coinciding with Larry Fitzgerald’s birthday.
