HBO said that after filming had gotten underway on the new season the previous week, it had become apparent that the character created by Mike White for Carter did not align once on set. Last July, White and Dern were seen talking over smoothies in Los Angeles, a small public sign that their collaboration had not gone dormant. By the time this recast landed, the role had become a moving target inside a production already underway on the French Riviera.

Season 4 is set in France and follows a new group of White Lotus hotel guests and employees over a week during the Cannes Film Festival. Production has continued on the French Riviera with things moved around to accommodate the recasting, and filming locations include Cannes, St. Tropez, Monaco and Paris.

The setting also narrows the practical window for a change like this. A story built around a week during the festival leaves less room for delay, so a central role changing hands after cameras are rolling forces the production to absorb the adjustment rather than pause for long.
